If you live in New York City and are at a stage in your life when you're contemplating a move to the suburbs (or your friends have begun to leave the city en masse), you've probably heard of at least one of these towns in Essex County: Montclair, Maplewood, and Glen Ridge. That's because these three spots, all accessible via New Jersey Transit trains, are eternally popular among NYC expats looking for more space and a little more greenspace for their green.
"We have a lot of people coming from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City and Hoboken," says Stacie Levy of Keller Williams who lives in Maplewood. The reason? While different in size, each of these areas has its own downtown and, many say, an artsy, bohemian vibe that those coming from NYC tend to appreciate.

If your household income is $500K, you can live quite well in these towns.
Otherwise, not so well....
True. They are beautiful towns, but it costs $$$$$.
Montclair Center is not as nice as Upper Montclair, going towards the university.
Just don’t move to Irvington, which is right next to Maplewood. I grew up in Irvington way back when it was a fairly decent place to live. That’s when it was 95% white. Now...it has one of the highest crime rates in the state.
Trump needs to have any future refugees sent to these towns. Martha’s Vineyard too.
Anywhere New Yorkers move to is a no-go zone for me. Then again, the places I would live in probably give them the heebie-jeebies with all that open space.
These are just a few miles west of me; I think Glen Ridge is exclusive, Maplewood is nice, and Montclair not so nice at all. They are expensive in terms of taxes, so only a NYer would see it as a bargain, and somehow Montclair seems to be seeing encroachment from Newark.
Its been said in New Jersey that every worker is double-taxed. First to pay for their own services, and then to pay for a family (usually in LaHood) that doesn’t feel like working. Difficult to see anything good coming from that.

I agree...I’d get a few stops further down the tracks. One ‘good’ thing about the trains there, though. They’re so expensive to ride that most of the ‘locals’ on the way to the city don’t bother with them.
My home town Montclair. Perfect place to grow up but the libs and NY libs have destroyed it. It’s just not the same...

Glen Ridge was once a very conservative town, but with all the NY influx from the nearby NY cities, we have turned liberal. My vote means nothing — but I still vote.
Schools here are a big reason for the town attracting many. They continue to maintain high standards.
The taxes? Tell me about it!!! Sigh.
I remember that from my youth, that the Glen Ridge schools were great. People used to try to use a fake address to send their kids there. Newark schools were OK, especially in the lower grades, but not as good as Glen Ridge.
I rode through it twice a day for six years. Pretty town.
