A mosque in the capital of the United Arab Emirates Abu Dhabi was renamed on Wednesay to Mariam Umm Eisa meaning mother of Jesus in Arabic.
The move was aimed at promoting social connections between followers of different religions and strengthen the common characteristics between them, local media reported.
The name of the mosque, previously known as Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Mosque, was changed by order of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed al-Nahyan to consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions.
UAE's Minister of State for Tolerance Sheikha Lubna al-Qasimi said the move reflected the Crown Princes pure humanity and portrays a bright image of the real tolerance and coexistence in the UAE.
Qasimi explained that the mosque is located in a place that reflects values of tolerance and coexistence, as the area includes many civilized places of worship.
February last year, the UAE opened the Ministry of Tolerance to promote tolerance as a fundamental value in UAE society, the ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum said.
Senior chaplain Reverend Canon Thompson at nearby Anglican church St. Andrews said he was pleased with the renaming. We are delighted that we are celebrating something that we have in common between both our faiths, he told Gulf News.
Chrislam.
Blasphemous.
I wonder how long before the bombs go off.
When they allow Christians to build churches in UAE and Saudi Arabia, then I will believe this token gesture.
Well, you didn’t read the whole article. They quoted an Anglican priest who is at a nearby Anglican church.
You’re right, news to me—a church in UAE.

Fine, renounce demands for Sharia Law in Western nations and we’ll talk...
The UAE has churches, Saudi does not!
Mary the Theotokos (Mother of God/Birthgiver of God) would not appreciate the blasphemous prayers that will be uttered in that mosque!!!!
If muslims in the UAE would come to know Her, She will lead them to Her Son, who is—as we prayed in Divine Liturgy this morning—One of the Holy Trinity!!!!
I fail to see how anybody can see this as a bad thing...
A token expression, but an important one.
This is not as surprising as one might think. The Koran honors Mary and Jesus, who is seen as a prophet rather than the Son of God.
Read the story. St Andrews is near by.
Some Muslims think that Catholics worship Mary, just as some Protestants think. And the fact is that a few Catholics do worship Mary. But that is not the Catholic theology.
It seems that Catholics ask Mary to pray for them in the same way that anyone would ask any other believer to pray for them. But Mary is the Mother of Jesus. Jesus obeys the Ten Commandments. So Jesus honors both his father and his mother. That means Jesus listens to his mother, Mary. Jesus listens to Mary in a way he does not listen to the rest of us humans. Muslims don't believe in the Trinity. They don't understand the Trinity. So they have problems with Catholics "praying to Mary". But Muslims do think Mary was a good, Godly person. Their problem isn't with Mary. it is with the way Catholics act about her.
It’s a step
Is Islam the One World Church or is it the other hate group?
Yep. That's right. According to one account I read ... Jesus is the most mentioned person in the Quran.
Maybe they could build a CHURCH and name it Mariam Umm Eisa.” Of course, might be hard to find enough parishioners to fill it.
And the fact is that a few Catholics do worship Mary.
Don’t say things you know nothing about. No Catholic worships Mary, as she is not a Person in the Blessed Trinity.
Taqiiya or suicidal.
Mark 3:31-35 and Matthew 12:46-50 imply otherwise. Jesus ignored Mary and His siblings and left them standing outside while He attended to His followers.
