The theory: a cargo ship with a "dirty bomb" was just outside of Charleston, South Carolina.
The notion came to life during a live YouTube broadcast Wednesday evening.
During the broadcast, conspiracy theorist George Webb initially claimed a "source" had told him that there was "a dirty bomb planned for a major city." Based on the information from the "source," Webb said he believed Memphis might be the target.
The Coast Guard said in a further statement provided to CNN that the source of the threat had been detained by authorities for further questioning. The statement did not mention Webb's name, however.
But Webb, whose full name is George Webb Sweigert, was in police custody in Zanesville, Ohio, on Thursday morning.
He was, at the time, due in court, having been found in his car and suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

So all of this started up as an anonymous source episode, and just into various variations, possibly with other anonymous sources contributing more bogus info into a fake story?
Were there Russians involved...at the very least?
The old whisper a phrase to a person and have them pass it on down a line and see what that phrase turns into at the end thing. That and a sick individual as the originator.
A similar scenario (actual nuclear event v. dirty bomb) was set in Charleston SC harbor in a made-for-TV movie back in the 90s, IIRC. It included the use of NEST (Nuclear Emergency Security Team) as part of the story.
Webb has all the characteristics of an agent provocateur.
George Webb videos have been posted all over FreeRepublic lately.
A conspiracy theory?
Like how Russia and Trump conspired to steal the 2016 election from Hitlery Rotten Clinton?
Does anyone really know if anything was found the ship? I see not official report.
“Special Bulletin”, 1983
Thanks for that reminder on when that was aired. Can’t believe I was off by an entire decade. Another sign of aging, I guess.
Remember, the only thing worse than aging is not aging.
Those are the questions to be asked, and not journalistic assumptions it was a conspiracy theory.
I am not promoting the conclusion it is not all an error on Webb's part. I am saying the “journalists” have not made a convincing case it was a conspiracy theory. Are they, whether Webb was right or wrong in THIS CASE, just trying to conduct character assassination on Webb.
I have only recently started following George Webb by watching his videos.
This guy is a walking encyclopedia. I guess today it’s a walking data server.
The story on this nuclear material in shipping containers is just beginning. Conspiracy theories are only conspiracies until they are proved to be true. George is working on that.
He has a credible (to him) source and an official statement by the US Coast Guard that begs more questions.
Is it “true?”. Let’s find out! It’s only about NUCLEAR Material being shipped in containers around the world and into the US. No BIG DEAL. Right? /s
I for one can decide for myself about “conspiracy theories”, but only if I hear about them. To just dismiss everything as a “conspiracy”, nothing to see here, is frankly, STUPID! Being IGNORANT won’t keep you informed or safe.
“Question Authority” “Question EVERYTHING”.
NEST = Nuclear Emergency Support Team. The sub-unit for tracking nuclear devices would be the Search Response Team.
Listening to George Webb quickly shows me how woefully UNINFORMED I am compared to him. He’s a little hard to follow because of his vast knowledge. I feel like I need to investigate things he says or names he mentions in every single sentence. He speaks matter of factly like everyone knows about these subjects and people like he does.
Frankly it’s hard to follow for someone like me that doesn’t sleep, eat, and breathe this stuff like George Webb does.
But then he isn’t really talking to lowly me. He is talking to his fellow genius followers and sleuths.
