Yesterdays news, aside from the usual Trump obstructing, colluding, and making money on his investments, included a ship collision. As described by ABC, a Navy destroyer collides with container ship off coast of Japan. NBC had a similar headline, Navy destroyer collides with ship off Japan.
Fox News worded their headline a little differently, US Navy involved in collision. As did CNN saying, Navy destroyer collision off Japan.
It was a terrible accident as US sailors are missing and potentially injured or worse, but my point is regarding the choice of words describing what happened.

Without knowing all the details, my guess is that the OOD on the destroyer lost the big picture and delayed calling the Captain to the bridge until it was to late to avoid the collision. JMO.
Neither captain is in the right here. It is and should be embarrassing for both captains. The only way for this to be OK is if the ship was being stopped by the American Navy ship and it refused. Or if it was out of control and the Navy ship was trying to aid it. But for a destroyer to be hit by another ship does not look good. And it should never happen.
Lets let the story come out. And we will see what excuse they have. I hope its a good one. But right now there does not seem to be an acceptable cause.
200 thousand tons at two knots. Do the math!
Multiple reports say collision took place 56 miles S of Yokosuka. This puts them in open sea, nowhere near the harbor.
Your conclusions are invalid.
Correct. From the initial evidence, I would say the DDG was seriously at fault. It's a tragedy, but unless some very unusual cicumstances come to light in the investigation, the crew of the DDG really dropped the ball. As a retired naval officer (SWO), I take no pleasure in saying this.
Pray for those sailors still missing at sea.
Good post. In another life I was a Navy ship driver. Our captain always expected us to make a significant maneuver to find open water well before we got close to another ship, regardless of who had the right of way. As we always said, “A collision at sea can ruin your entire day”.
thank you for explaining the rules. I suspect the captain is going to get CM and the officer in command at the time.
The Navy hates getting in wrecks and is a sure fired way for a Naval career to go into the crapper.
provided it was a crossing situation. It could have been an overtaking situation. in this case the overtaking vessel is burdened. The ship being overtaken maintains course and speed.
“normally the larger, less manueverable ship has the right of way.”.
BINGO! Did anyone consider that possibly the destroyer was in the wrong and was attempting to get out of the way to avoid the collision? I’ll wait and see what the official Naval investigation tells us, NOT what some media wannabe expert writes.
A long while back, “studies” proved that the “average American reading level” was appropriate to normal 6th graders.
The msm made it a priority to not write above the 6th grade level.
Now, the msm has no one in its industry capable of thinking above the 6th grade level.
The photos tell who hit who! Any Cop can see that!
Mebbe the ol' gang from Asiana, Capt Sum Ting Wong, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow survived the plane crash and got themselves reassigned to a cargo ship drivin' gig for the Japs! d;^)
The course of the cargo ship was erratic as it pulled a 180 before heading into course that brought it into collision with Fitzgerald
Will be an interesting investigation
Prayers for the missing ..
If the story is to be believed, JFK was on a much smaller boat that could not out gun nor out run the bigger faster boat so they lay with all engines and lights out hoping to be passed bye. Of course that could have been a Washington and the cherry tree story too.
however, the captains of both vessels equally bear the burden and responsibility to avoid collision at sea
I wonder if the Navy vessel was headed into port, and liberty, and the people on the bridge didn’t want to lose time? Merchant vessels always steer the cheapest, fastest course, Navy vessels are in the not-for-profit sector.
There is no passive to “collide”. Both objects involved in a collision collided with each other, even if one couldn’t avoid it.
You misquoted the position.
