In the wake of the ghastly conflagration that engulfed a recently-renovated 24 story apartment tower in London, the world is waking up to the dire threat created by energy-saving green zealots. It turns out that nobody much worried about the fire hazard involved when flammable materials were used to add an outer skin of cladding to the building, creating heat insulation thanks to the air pocket between the new cladding and the old exterior wall, but also providing an ideal space for fire to race up the building. As happened.
Snip
Did green fever cause the obvious fire hazard to be ignored? We simply do not know. But the zealotry of those who are convinced that CO2 increases are dooming us could well prioritize energy savings above safety. As seems to have been done in London.
How many more green death traps are out there? Tens of thousands in the UK, but how many in the USA?

I hate when green goes bright red then black.
Another example:
The altitudes assigned to restricted airspace around controlled airports is gradually being lowered across the US. The purpose of this is to create more gradual descent and ascent trajectories for the airliners. This saves fuel (and the earth!).
But it also decreases the altitude of available uncontrolled airspace near the airports, so general aviation aircraft must operate at lower altitudes.
Aside from safety issues related to airspace incursion, general aviation pilots must now deal with any mechanical or other emergencies much more quickly, as their available glide time and distance has now been greatly reduced.
Soo... I guess the question is, with all those green credits he earned - where those enough to cover the amount of pollution made by the fire?
What a fail.
A green death trap that blazed to the sky. Lord have mercy on people living in similar complexes.
Not just the cladding, the fire itself was said to have started by a green refrigerator, one that used pressurized propane rather than inert Freon as a coolant.
Especially since the muzzies now know just how easy it is to incinerate an entire building full of kafir.
Just sayin'
Quran 5:37 The Christian disbelievers (Kafir) will long to get out of the Fire, but never will they get out there from; and theirs will be an enduring torture.
That is exactly what I thought of when the news first hit.
If a “green” device killed people, isn’t that good? Now there are fewer people to despoil Gaia. The irony!
Fire safety experts have speculated that the building’s new external cladding was a possible cause of the rapid spread of the fire.[68] Experts said the cladding essentially worked like a chimney in spreading the fire.[69] The cladding could be seen burning and melting, causing additional speculation that it was not made of fire-resistant material.[21] One resident said: “The whole one side of the building was on fire. The cladding went up like a matchstick.”[70]
There have been concerns about the dangers of external cladding since the early 1990s, notably following a fire at flats in Knowsley Heights, Liverpool in 1991.[71] Several major fires in high-rise buildings that saw flames spreading up façades at a devastatingly rapid rate have involved flammable cladding, among them the 2007 fire at The Water Club in Atlantic City, USA, the 2009 Lakanal House fire in Camberwell, London, the 2009 Beijing Television Cultural Center fire, China, the 2010 Wooshin Golden Suites fire in Marine City, Busan, South Korea, the 2012 Mermoz Tower fire in Roubaix, France, the 2014 Lacrosse Tower fire in Melbourne, Australia, and the 2015 fires in Dubai at The Marina Torch and The Address Downtown Dubai.[72][73][74]
Records show that a contractor had been paid £2.6 million to install an “ACM rainscreen over-clad” during the recent refurbishment at Grenfell Tower.[24] ACM stands for aluminium composite material, the combustibility of which depends on the choice of insulation core material.[72] The product used was Reynobond, which is available with different types of core material polyethylene, as reportedly used in Grenfell Tower (Reynobond PE), or a more fire-resistant material (Reynobond FR).[54][75] The Reynobond cladding used in Grenfell Tower reportedly cost £24 per square metre for the fireproof versions, and £22 for the flammable version a saving of 1 part in 12 on the price.[75] According to the US-based manufacturer of Reynobond, the polyethylene version of the material is banned in the United States for use in buildings exceeding 40 ft in height, because of the risk of spreading fire and smoke.[76] The cladding also used an insulation foam product named Celotex RS5000.[77] According to its datasheet the product, charred pieces of which littered the area around Grenfell Tower after the fire, “will burn if exposed to a fire of sufficient heat and intensity”.[54][78]
Some residents had reported concern that the new cladding on the building was fixed onto it with wooden battens.[55] There is widespread concern amongst residents and fire safety experts about the increasing use of timber, even in high-rise buildings, following a change to building regulations.[79][80] It was reported that one reason for the new cladding was to improve the view for people living in the surrounding area.[81] Similar cladding containing highly flammable insulation material is believed to have been installed on thousands of other high-rise buildings in countries including Britain, France, the UAE and Australia.[73][82] This goes against advice published by the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology.[83]

Not just the green materials. Local media is reporting that sprinklers weren’t installed because tenants objected. If true, so what? Why didn’t the council insist? Also looks like local authorities were lax on all sorts of inspections. The common denominator isn’t green materials. It’s the nanny state. If folks want decent housing, public housing should be privatized. Until then, folks should undestand they get what they pay for.
That refrigerator story has not been confirmed. And I’ll bet the authorities are all too happy to have it out there since other causes, bad wiring, a tenant actually causing it, wouldn’t serve the government well.
Also, green construction can’t be blamed for authorities telling tenants to stay in their flats while their building burned down around them.
In recent years, there have been a lot of stories about people getting sick on cruise ships, hospitals, or other enclosed spaces. I’ve wondered if perhaps the janitors have given up tried and true disinfectants, in favor of some ‘green’ alternative.
Misplaced thrift....
If we lived in caves, and subsisted on a diet of nuts and berries, these tragedies would not happen. With a thoroughly green lifestyle, this planet can comfortably accommodate a human population of almost 5 million people. Let’s make it happen!!
Burning high rise looks like London circa 1940.
Faulty “green” on the external tank also ultimately destroyed the space shuttle Columbia.
