Snowbound California roads still getting a major plow job

) — There may be no more potent reminder of California's humongous snowfall than the plows still clearing roads that snake across the state's highest mountains as summer approaches.

Crews have been digging, blowing and blasting for months — and the work is not finished, though an approaching heat wave could speed up the process.

"We're almost at the middle of June and we still have lots of passes that aren't open," said Florene Trainor, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation.

Few roads traverse the Sierra Nevada, the rocky spine running 400 miles up the state that is home to Yosemite National Park. Mountain passes are typically open by Memorial Day.

The only road through Yosemite, Highway 120, remained closed this week as crews dig out from snows that topped 20 feet and drifted well over 50 feet.

East entrance is still not available for us to use. Come on calibfornia, loosen up some high speed rail money to help clear the roads. LOL! Mount Rose ski area just south of Reno has a 768" total for the year. Stay tuned for the next drought which will be "unprecedented". Again. Until the next YUGE snowfall year. It's called weather.

How much longer before the melt becomes a problem for the dam infrastructure?

Planned on visiting Lassen volcanic park next week. Now we’re going to hike in the Trinity alps instead. Which isn’t a bad alternative. But what a winter ...

Hmmm. We may soon see. Supposed to be in the mid 90’s here in the Truckee Meadows by Monday. The Truckee River is cranking right now and supposedly will be all summer. Pretty sure calibfornia has already dumped YUGE amounts of fresh water into the Pacific to help ward off the melt.

Leftwinger friends of mine sit here and cry because it is 65*F. outside instead of 80* F. and can never be happy.

Well, with summer rapidly approaching, maybe we need to change their monikers to ‘margarine’ from snow flake. At least until next fall.

“they” will NEVER be happy until humans are all gone. Yet the still refuse to be part of the solution.

How much longer before the melt becomes a problem for the dam infrastructure?

While most of the reservoirs are close to full and couldn't handle the full snowmelt, the river systems downstream have generally dropped below flood stage.

So the plan is probably to ramp up reservoir releases to match the inflow from the melt, which should start up pretty good this week with the coming heat. Downstream rivers will rise but hopefully not flood.

A very quick melt, or more rain, could cause some problems in some places. Nobody seems to talk about it much, until it's too late.
