The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.

The move by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s own conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.

Trump had received private assurances from former FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation. Officials say that changed shortly after Comey’s firing.

Five people briefed on the requests, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Adm. Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers’ recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller’s investigators as early as this week. The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy and it’s unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI.

Rod had a simple answer when asked about that piece of fake news. “No.”

Washington Post claimed “Rosenstein threatened to resign”

But the “person close to the White House” who made the claim without using his or her name was contradicted by none other than Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein himself. The next day he said, “I’m not quitting” when asked by reporters. “No,” he said to the follow-up question of whether he had threatened to quit.

Washington Post claimed: “FBI Director James B. Comey requested more resources from the Justice Department for his bureau’s investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, according to two officials with knowledge of the discussion.”

Anonymous sources again had something very different to say from people whose comments were tied to their names, who all denied the report.

Washington Post claimed: “reports that Comey had requested more funding or other resources for the Russia investigation”

The next day under oath, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe repeatedly denied that the probe into Russia was undersourced or requiring any additional funds. [and/or other resources]

Each of these stories were explosive breaking news that served an anti-Trump narrative but later turned out to be false.

Rights and authority mean nothing in this case. They want Trump’s head, will do anything to get it, and will ignore rights, laws, ethics, and everything else. If Rosenstein doesn’t limit this to collusion with the Russians, he needs to go, too.

I hate to say this, but we might be wise to think Tom Delay.

He was innocent, but a crooked guy pushed through a conviction. It was only later that Delay was exonerated.

Of course he’d already lost his position in Congress and the clout he had.
