Parliament definitely moved to the left, new Tories in Scotland probably more liberal than those that lost in England. Scottish Tory Leader (didn’t run for Parliament) is a big star now, she’s a lesbo.

If you told me +12 in Scotland but they would lose seats net I’d have said put down the crack pipe. Separate dynamics, just like Quebec in the Canadian elections.

The DUP seems better than the Tories on most things, they’re social conservatives and some don’t worship “climate science”. Not that they will have any effect nationally on those issues. This might mean good things for the local governance of NI though, keep queer marriage illegal there.

But they are fans of welfare that the Tories want to cut and they have specific brexit demands.

I heard the a-hole Labour House of Lords may feel they have a free hand to obstruct since the Tories didn’t win an outright majority. Should have put Lords abolition in the Tory manifesto, it would have won votes.

You seem to know about these things.

I am reading another forum and Irishmen there claim that some of the DUP councilmen want to bring back padlocking the swings in parks for Sundays as it used to be in the 60s because by their interpretation Sunday must be No-fun-day.

Is this an exaggeration or real?

The Conservative Party has been arguing for years that the House of Lords should be popularity elected, they should have used the bully pulpit to push for that. As an added bonus, it will make the anti-17th amendment "conservatives" cry when politicians can't appoint other politicians to run the upper house.

True, they do seem to the right of the Conservative Party, but I'd argue that's only because the so-called "Conservatives" since the David Cameron era have campaigned as Labour Party-lite. I see very little difference ideologically between Cameron and a "center-left" New Labour figure like Tony Blair. There are actual conservative Conservatives, but the party leadership wants to get a pat on the back from the media for embracing homo marriage, tree hugging, the EU, etc., and that hasn't changed under Theresa May. May doesn't inspire her party's base to come out to the polls, nor fills her party with confidence that they can lead the UK.

The DUP isn't afraid to stand on actual conservative policies, but aside from being a regional party that only runs in Northern Ireland, their basic premise forces socially conservative Catholics in Northern Ireland to vote against their own self-interests if they want a conservative government. To support the DUP means supporting the monarchy and Protestantism as the "official" state religion.

The other "more conservative" party in the UK, the UKIP, has nothing to campaign on now, and I imagine will fade into oblivion.

In an ideal world, Liam Fox would have succeeded Cameron, fought for and implemented actual conservative policies, and would be leading a unified Conservative Party to a victory nationwide now.

May's "snap election" is reminiscent to me of Ahnuld calling a special election in California to pass his "reforms", and it blowing up in his face big time. Good idea on paper, but implemented horribly.
