Should a liberal gun control activist have a Navy warship named after her?

Hillary Clinton plans to attend the launching ceremony of a warship. And not just any warship, but the USS Gabrielle Giffords, named for the liberal congresswoman who was shot in the head. For Hillary, every decision is still about wimmen and grrrls. But her decision raises the larger question about whether it is appropriate to name a warship after Giffords.

After all, Giffords was viewed as a helpless victim. That doesn't make for a very intimidating name for a warship. Giffords is called a hero because she survived. Does surviving make her a hero? I think surviving makes her a survivor. I think Giffords would have also been a hero if she had been shot while doing something heroic. But Giffords was just giving a liberal speech

Can't we rename it the USS George S. Patton or the USS Chesty Puller, if those names are not already taken?

Yeah, that’s gonna fill sailors with pride and a fighting spirit.

At least not as bad as the USS Harvey Milk. Naming after politicians needs to stop.

Considering how poorly armed the LCS ships are naming them after Giffords is not so far off.

“Should a liberal gun control activist have a Navy warship named after her?”

Absolutely not! Recently, they named a USN ship after Harvey Milk and Medger Evers. Navy ships should be named after truly American heroes such as congressional medal of honor winners, or distinguished admirals or generals, or great American presidents which are few and far between (the last one being Reagan).

> West Virginia also has a chain of gas stations named “Sheetz”, which no doubt refers to Byrd’s nickname. <

It’s only Monday, but that’s gotta win post of the week for sure.

If they want to name it after a living person, why not the USS Tim Kennedy. He's a former Green Beret sniper and an MMA fighter who re-enlisted shortly after Trump's missile attack on Syria.

Naming capital ships after dead, and eventually living, Republican politicians made the USS Gabrielle Giffords, the USS William J. Clinton, and, yes, the USS Barack Hussein Obama inevitable.

It was an incredibly hubristic thing to do, but done it was, and now we have to live with it.

I would go as far to say, they should be named after places, not people. You are always going to rub some people the wrong way with naming after a person, because no matter who you are, that person will not be universally liked.

Might as well name it the USS Run, Hide, Tell. It should be minimally staffed and used as a decoy to attract enemy fire away from a ship of value.

Maybe use it as a floating brig.

Bammy shouldn’t have anything larger than a LCS named after him.

That’s too good for that mutt, I suggest a garbage barge!

Bammy shouldn't have anything larger than a LCS named after him.

But naming aircraft carriers after Ford, Reagan, and Bush ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY guaranteed that there will be CVNs named after Clinton and Obama.

If you don't like that, you should have spoken up when Yorktown, Lexington, and Midway were ditched for politicians.

Last I checked only one or two high schools across the
nation are named after Ronald Reagan. Name new high schools
in California, New York, and Massachusetts after
President Reagan, then we can talk.

Think of all the cool nicknames the swab jockeys will give her.

The USS..........

......Never mind..... I deleted all of them as they wouldn’t pass muster with the powers that be here.

That little riverine boat the sailors got caught by Iran in would be about the only thing I’d name after Obama. The exact one- then put it in his Presidential Library.
