Memo to Ms. Griffin: the purpose of comedy is to invoke laughter in the audience. “Covfefe” makes me laugh. A severed head of a President, even if it were of the most recent former President, does not make me laugh; it makes me disgusted. I do think America’s Got Talent should feel the burn as well. They had a Trump impersonator on the show the first episode (this week). He was fine, he was funny. Nothing wrong with him. They’ve had Obama impersonators before too.
BUT THE SECOND THE AUDIENCE SAW HIM it was as if Hitler came on stage. They film the audience reactions often separately than live, and they edit. Sometimes they even make mistakes as they did that episode, where Simon Cowell is pictured seconds apart with two separate audiences behind him. Whoops. I’ve been in the audience many times of that show and I have been there when the took 30 minutes to do audience shots. “Look sad.” “Look astounded!” “Look like this was the greatest act you’ve ever seen.” “Look disgusted, like you want to vomit.” Somthey knew exactly how they were editing.
They chose to make their audience look like everyone despised the President of the United States. From the moment the impersonator walked onto the stage. I believe there was disguised booing and people were making the sign of the X with their arms.
When their Obama impersonator walked on stage years ago, the audience reaction shots they chose were people looking stunned, thrilled, and surprised (as if they thought this was the real Obama?). This time they chose people with angry disgusted faces.
And one of their judges (I think 2 or 3 are not American, only Howie Mandel is for sure American, not sure about Heidi Klum), Mel B, immediately pressed her X buzzer AS SOON AS THE TRUMP GUY APPEARED WALKING ONTO THE STAGE. This was all approved by the makers of the show or it wouldn’t have made the airing.
In the end, they all enjoyed the act. But the reaction on our summer national talent show was to be hateful and disgusted to see a representation of our President?? How can they call themselves a patriotic show?
