A pilot had a lucky escape after the last remaining Sea Vixen plane, known as the Foxy Lady, did an emergency landing at an airfield in Somerset yesterday. The pilot was unharmed after the aircraft, which served in the Royal Navy in the 1960s, did a 'belly-landing' on return to its base in Yeovilton. Scott Dabinett, 32, captured incredible photos of the heart-stopping incident, which saw the pilot touchdown without landing gear after flying back from the Duxford Air Show in Cambridgeshire.

Wheels up in this pic, too.

Landing gear problems seem endemic to this plane. April 6, 2012: "The Sea Vixen’s nose crashed onto the runway after its front wheel suddenly gave way as it taxied at Bournemouth Airport, Dorset."

Don’t mean to second guess a pilot, but it appears from the video he landed it on the tarmac.

Wouldn’t a grass landing have been safer - less risk of sparks and flames?

Granted, it wouldn’t have come to a stop as fast...

What an odd design.

Especially for a warplane?

I suspect the grass areas tend to have a lot of things to snag on like lighting, drainage stuff, who knows.

Video of planes landing on the runway gear up tend to slide straight, on grass seem to spin, flip over, etc.

Nope. Things dig into grass and make you do cartwheels downrange. He wanted to slide it out and he did.

It is like laying a big bike down in the soft soil, something is going to dig in and turn the bike into a gymnast on a long tumbling run. I’ll take the blacktop every time and let the leathers and helmet take care of it.

Consider the Vought F7U Cutlass.

Actually you have a much better chance of maintaining control if landing on a hard surface. The grass has bumps in it and will probably swing the aircraft after contact. The pilot choose properly.

Was wondering why DeHaviland didn't but the tails directly onto the swept wing. like this much better.

"Burst into flame"?

Skidding merrily along on a pair of underwing fuel tanks'll do that for ya...

They knew this was going to be a wheels-up. Don't Brit crash crews know how to lay a foam blanket on a runway?
