Merkel Warns US, Britain No Longer Reliable Partners

Europe “must take its fate into its own hands” faced with a western alliance divided by Brexit and Donald Trump’s presidency, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday.

“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days,” Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.

“We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands,” she added.

While Germany and Europe would strive to remain on good terms with America and Britain, “we have to fight for our own destiny,” Merkel went on.

The chancellor had just returned from a G7 summit which wound up Saturday without a deal between the US and the other six major advanced nations on upholding the 2015 Paris climate accords.

Merkel on Saturday labelled the result of the “six against one” discussion “very difficult, not to say very unsatisfactory”.

Wait till Turkey joins the group. Europe has become so vulnerable that they will not object to Turkey becoming a member of the EU.

Immediately restrict visas to Germans....cur all ties. This has been building since the end of WWII.

the Europeans truly have taken there fate by there own hands, quite fatally, liberalism kills , and sadly the USA is heading down the same hell hole.

Our cities are being stuffed with invaders intent on exterminating us, and to even point it out is a "hate crime"

It is amazing how these bright, hard working and intelligent people became Socialist. Socialism breeds on welfare....until their government runs out of money, then they will have Communism...when the populace can no longer pay the taxes required, they MUST work for next to nothing...communism

Our friends in Germany (6) feel our government treats "her people" badly...because we must pay for things they get for free....it only took Germany two generations to leave a dictatorship and glom onto the Nanny State......and we Americans have admittedly had a large part this.

Germany pays for their own defense

We OVER pay for our defense

that might be the root cause of the difference :)

The US and Britain were not “partners” but guardians who also were there to insure domestic tranquility in Europe and to ensure Germany behaved. The allied presence has given Europe its longest period of peace ever. Europeans would do well to keep that in mind.

Does Germany pay for the US troops stationed in Germany? I’m not trying to be contentious, I just don’t know.

Yep. Germany instinctively wants to divide Europe with Russia. Putin buys German politicians for sport. German companies lust after the Russian market. The moment the North Atlantic alliance is broken Molotov-Ribbentrop 2.0 will happen.

Germans used to pay housing and some other costs during the cold war for sure. It was always way way less
money to keep a unit in Germany versus home

since the cold war I among certain, US military has a rather small force in Germany these days compared to 1979 at least. I think it’s mainly support and logistics and air force, but haven’t kept on top of it.

That’s probably a very smart move by Trump inasmuch as it appears BOTH will soon be islamic states and hotbeds of ISIS activity.

I guess it’s what could be expected when a population votes for an old East German commie apparatchik!

The Commonwealth still exists maybe it’s time to beef it up and turn it into military alliance as well. I think each country already as enough alliances and treaties independently with the other members that it wouldn’t take much. Oh yeah, one or two former colonies may have to sign up :))
