Not One Sparrow
May 28, 2017
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.
Psalm 116:15
My mother, so dignified and proper her entire life, now lay in a hospice bed, held captive by debilitating age. Struggling for breath, her declining condition contradicted the gorgeous spring day that danced invitingly on the other side of the windowpane.
All the emotional preparation in the world cannot sufficiently brace us for the stark reality of goodbye. Death is such an indignity! I thought.
I diverted my gaze to the birdfeeder outside the window. A grosbeak flitted close to help itself to some seed. Instantly a familiar phrase popped into my mind: Not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it (Matt. 10:29 nlt). Jesus had said that to His disciples as He gave them marching orders for a mission to Judea, but the principle applies to all of us. You are worth more than many sparrows, He told them (v. 31).
My mom stirred and opened her eyes. Reaching back to her childhood, she used a Dutch term of endearment for her own mother and declared, Mutis dead!
Yes, my wife agreed. Shes with Jesus now. Uncertain, Mom continued. And Joyce and Jim? she questioned of her sister and brother. Yes, theyre with Jesus too, said my wife. But well be with them soon!
Its hard to wait, Mom said quietly.
Heavenly Father, this life can be so hard and painful. But You! . . . You are right there with us, loving us, keeping us, holding us! And You promise never to leave us or forsake us.
Death is the last shadow before heavens dawn.
Part of the emphasis in todays reading is the value God places on every human life. When we face the death of those dear to usor our own deathit is a comfort to remember how deeply God cares for us. In fact, the psalmist accentuates this assurance, saying, Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants (Ps. 116:15). Amazingthe eternal God is concerned about the human experience of death. Though this death is the consequence of our rebellion and fall, God offers us His life so that even though we will inevitably face physical death Jesus promises, The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die (John 11:2526). This shows that His promise to always be with us extends through this life and beyondeven surpassing death. How can this comfort us as we face the passing of loved ones? As we face our own mortality?

O God of spirits and of all flesh,
Who hast trampled down death,
and overthrown the devil,
and given life to Thy world!
Do Thou Thyself, O Lord,
give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants
... especially our forefathers, fathers,
brethren and sisters,
here and everywhere laid to rest;
officers and soldiers who have laid down their lives for faith and homeland:
Give rest to all of them in a place of light,
in a place of repose,
whence all sickness, sorrow,
and sighing are fled away.
Pardon every sin committed by them in word,
deed, and thought,
in that Thou art a good God,
the Lover of Mankind;
for there is no one that liveth and sinneth not;
for Thou alone art without sin,
Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
and Thy word is truth.
For Thou art the resurrection and the life
and the repose of Thy departed servants
O Christ our God;
and unto Thee do we send up glory,
together with Thine unoriginate Father,
and Thy most holy, good,
and life-creating Spirit,
now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen

 Remember The Fallen:
52 Years Later Navy Pilot Returns From Vietnam. His Jet Was Located At The Bottom Of A Pond. Photo: Deborah Crosby, right, walks away from her fathers casket after its arrival in San Diego on Friday, May 26, 2017. Her brothers, Douglas Crosby, left, John Crosby, second from left, and Steven Crosby look on. The aviators elderly sister, Sharon, and brother, David, were also present. AP: A year ago, military investigators found the remains of a naval aviator shot down in what was then North Vietnam in 1965. On Friday, his children received their father's casket and Sunday, Lt. Cmdr. Frederick Crosby will be buried with full military honors and a Navy flyover. Deborah Crosby, now 58, was only six when she was sent home from the first grade to learn her father was presumed dead, though his body had not been found. Her mother could never talk about that day, but she gave Crosby and her brothers a binder with articles about her fathers plane zooming low through the clouds on a bomb damage assessment mission before it was gunned down by North Vietnamese ground forces in 1965. The 31-year-old pilot was armed only with cameras, his daughter said. A year ago, military investigators found his remains in a fish pond in north Vietnam. Deborah Crosby never doubted the fact that her father was killed. But her grief seemed to linger in a deep space inside her until she received news that his remains had been recovered, finally giving her closure. Decades passed and her mother and grandmother both died before investigators got a breakthrough on their third trip to the area when they met Pham Van Truong, a lifelong resident of Nam Ngan ward in Thanh Hoa City. According to a 50-page report given to Deborah Crosby, the 89-year-old man told investigators he couldnt recall the month or year, but he remembered during the war that he was cooking limestone to reinforce his house when he heard gunfire and ran to the nearby levee to investigate. He saw two planes headed toward his house, and one was on fire as it glided toward the levee. He said he could see its wing and tail surfaces were missing. The aircraft rolled as it hit the fish pond in front of his house, splashing Van Truong with water and mud. The other aircraft kept flying toward the sea. Based on the new information, U.S. military investigators decided to comb the bottom of the pond in 2015. Its nice to be able to let out the tears and to have some relief in our hearts, Crosby said. And now were able to talk about it. Before we didnt talk much about this and now we can talk proudly and we have you know a happier ending and we can visit my dads gravesite. Crosby's brothers received the remaining fabric from his uniform, his cigarette lighter and wedding band. She wanted the flag draped over his coffin to be able to hold it close to my heart.

Got rid of most of the snow. There is some fresh up the hill. Trail Ridge Road was cleared to open for the season this weekend but a storm blew the road shut again. Three weeks and the days will start to get shorter.

One old Vietnam buddy of mine had a bronze star but would never say why.
I asked another Vietnam buddy who was a mutual friend.
He said, “he won’t tell me.
It was probably something crazy or stupid”. LOL

"I VOW TO THEE, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."
