WASHINGTON - An estimated 23 million people would lose health coverage by 2026 under Republican legislation aimed at repealing Obamacare, a nonpartisan congressional agency said on Wednesday in the first calculation of the new bill's potential impact.
The report from the Congressional Budget Office also said federal deficits would fall by $119 billion between 2017 and 2026 under the bill, which was approved this month by the Republican-dominated House of Representatives. The CBO score raises the stakes for Republican senators now working on their own version of the legislation.
House Republicans came under sharp criticism for passing the bill before the CBO could make its assessment. The Trump administration already has relied on the House bill's healthcare spending cuts in its proposed federal budget.
The bill is called the American Health Care Act and it would fulfill a long-running Republican goal - repealing and replacing much of former President Barack Obama's 2010 Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare. President Donald Trump, who made replacing Obamacare a key campaign promise in 2016, and other Republicans say it is too costly and creates unwarranted government interference in healthcare decisions.
Congress is aiming to pass the bill under a process called reconciliation, which requires only a simple majority of votes in the Senate, where Republicans hold a 52-48 majority, instead of 60 votes. Under those rules, all elements of the bill must have a direct budgetary impact or else they must be stricken from the legislation.
The CBO said federal deficits would fall by $119 billion between 2017 and 2026 under the Republican bill. The House bill would eliminate most Obamacare taxes that help subsidize private health coverage for individuals, roll back the government's Medicaid health plan for the poor and disabled and replace the law's income-based tax credits...

It’s easier to give than take away. Trump needs to let it fail OR start promoting his bill. As of right now, the media has some of the public convinced Obamacare is going well. Start showing the hard cases of Obamacare and pounding that point home, or it’s going to be hard to get support from the general public for this bill.
How many of these ‘23 million’ are here illegally?
How many of these ‘23 million’ even need, or want insurance?
Factual figures don’t lie.
Exactly. Why isn’t Trump’s media team pushing that point and bringing these cases forward?
Agree. Time to roll out the nonstop, 24/7 ad campaigns telling the TRUTH about 0CommieCare, who will remained covered, $$$ saved to working families, $$ saved to our deficit, etc.
Not that the propaganda/leftist MSM would even allow such ads to be aired on their lying, fake news networks.
Why isn’t Trump’s media team pushing that chart? The person fighting for Trump is Trump on Twitter. His media team is not promoting him sufficiently and are acting like typical, spineless Republicans that roll over and give the media/Dems the narrative.
I agree, but Trump’s media team is not helping him. They are allowing him to get pummeled, and they are not on the offense.
So, what was it the CBO said about Barrycare?
You are doing more than Trump’s media team or the media team of anyone in the GOP. Trump should be Tweeting these charts!
Hooray! How many millions does that include who wont be forced to buy a bad product that makes them too poor to actually go to a doctor???
Indeed. They could create simple bullet points, for constant repetition. For example, this increase of $250/month in those covered under healthcare.gov plans, since Obamacare began, amounts to $3000 per year, or 9% of the average median annual income
Government's corrupt, crony-capitalist health plan just stole 10% of your income, people!
They are included in the “ people who will lose health insurance”
Several networks recently refused to air pro-Trump agenda ads, IIRC.
What do you suggest they do to get around that?
It’s the same 23 million that were forced to buy insurance because of the penalties involved.
When it comes down to pleasing us or these vague 23 million people we will win out as we did with the House. The Senate Democrats’ heads will be in a vice. Relax!
I believe the ads were cancelled because they called the MSM “fake news.” Even though I concur with the ads, the media got themselves into a huff over it because, you know, CNN is the most trusted name in news (so sayeth CNN).
I think if they just did ads promoting the health bill and showing the problems with Obamacare, they could get them through. The good news, however, is that Trump can get around it. This is from my blogpost (I did in large part on the PR not being done by Trump’s media team) which is in my tagline:
“Trump’s team should Tweet out info/articles about cost of rising premiums and deductibles. Where are the rallies, press conferences, town halls or videos showing people whose premiums and deductibles are too high?
Where the rallies, press conferences, town halls, or videos showing the people paying the fine vs. getting the insurances?
Where are the rallies, press conferences, town halls, or videos of the small business owners impacted?
Trump did a roundtable with some of these people, but it got minimal if any media coverage, despite Trump allowing the media to film it. Do a rally and have these people speak at the beginning. Do a press conference which the media will be forced to cover, and have these people speak at the beginning. Do Town hall with people who have suffered as a result of Obamacare. Trump, his staff like Kellyanne, Dan, etc. and the GOP need to be doing meetings with these people and putting up articles as well as livestreaming/posting videos. People need to see the failures of Obamacare. For good measure, some of Trump’s voters are on Obamacare, and Trump should talk with people who are doing well with Obamacare and explain why his plan won’t hurt them.”
I’ll also point out that PGR88 posted some great charts here. Trump and his team need to be Tweeting out these charts and using them.
Please I am begging you! Please take my worthless Obamacare from me. My wife's thyroid medication was just over a hundred dollars with the real insurance we had previously and now I just paid $354.00 which was the best price through GoodRx®. The deductibles and co-pays make me pay out of pocket the whole year. It is totally worthless unless my pent-up anger gives me a heart attack. Then I may live with only a ten or twenty thousand dollar loss.
In Georgia this year there were only two companies, BCBS and Kaiser, that would sell a qualifying policy. In six months I'll apply for Medicare for more socialist pacification and fraud at its best.
Yeah? 22.9 million are illegal aliens and their spawn. Who cares?
Love it!
And, agree 100%.
You’re HIRED!! ;-)
