The isolation that came to Big Sur this year when wet weather closed several roads has deepened with a giant mudslide across Highway 1, just south of the small community of Gorda (Monterey County).
A quarter-mile-wide wall of mud and rock barreled over an oceanfront stretch of road Saturday night, fortunately on a section of the highway where there was no traffic because the area was already closed due to smaller slides.
The new slide is certain to postpone the opening of Highway 1 at Big Surs southern end, a link to the dramatic coastline that was expected to open in mid-June.

Whoooaaa. One of if not the most beautiful drive I’ve ever made. But I was checking those slopes every few minutes. Thresearch no worry about obstructing an ocean view with development in that area...
All new coastline. GE location:
35.864203° N
-121.43067° W
There is one at the link, but I can't hotlink it.

When I drove up the coast, I went inland for awhile on 101, then took the road through Fort Hunter Ligget to highway 1. It was a hairy drive, I was alone. Lots of switchbavks, flimsy guardrails, etc. But the view when I spoiled first the water, then the coastal highway, is one I will never forget. I think that road is a bit to the north of where the landslide is.
Spotted, not spoiled. Yeesh.
the road’s buried 40ft deep and still sliding.
How could I go wrong in Carmel with Clint Eastwood as my Mayor!
It may be among these...
Coastline, search "Gorda"...
It’s not. That’s its charm.
Judging from the angles of the two pieces of road on either side I would guess that the beach was previously concave, or at least the hillface at road level was.
I went back and forth on the coast road on a motorcycle in 67. I was stationed at Monterey and went camping on weekends to Big Sur.
That stretch of road is a sight to behold

“I sure hope that guy with the house just to the south doesnt work in Gorda which is just to the north. If so his commute went from 5 minutes to maybe an hour or more.”
Unless there is a secondary road up over the mountains behind, it’s not a 1 hour drive! from Carmel Valley to Cambria there are no roads east. If you have to go around, it’s at least a 3 hour drive (171 miles).
wow anyone under there like reid pelosi or waters
OMG, that’s a picture of the mudslide? That’s the road, interrupted?
Yes, but some want to be flat much sooner than others!
I LOVE your picture. Do you have a website with more?
Wow, is this your painting? I love it!! A beautiful rendition of great subject matter.
That is one hell of a shovel-ready job.
