SNL’s Colin Jost Says Trump Hosting the Show Didn’t Humanize Him

In a new feature on Saturday Night Live in The Hollywood Reporter, members of the cast and crew discussed what it’s been like dealing with Donald Trump’s ascent, triumph, and institutionalization. Towards the end of the piece, staffers finally addressed the elephant in the room when it comes to anyone from SNL speaking negatively about Trump: the fact that they let Trump, prior becoming the Republican nominee, host the show.

Instead of expressing guilt or regret about the choice, as former cast member Taran Killam did in a recent interview, where he said the choice to book Trump “felt like a move for ratings from both sides,” the SNL affiliates seem to believe that it was a logical and unproblematic move at the time. Here’s what Colin Jost had to say about the criticism levied at the show:

I recently watched several Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts from the early to mid 1970’s. Barry Goldwater and Hubert Humphrey were guests and would not only roast the person of the week, but would take light harded jabs at each other.....maybe because they both lost in the national election but MAYBE it was good honest humor.

That is what is missing. The era of the Dean Martin Roasts and SNL of 2017 are worlds apart.....

Trump is probably THE most human President I’ve seen, at least in my lifetime. He talks and acts like any regular guy you’d meet on the street, maybe that’s just me though as I grew up in New York city. And talk about transparent! The guy tells you immediately what he thinks and doesn’t mince words. This BS of acting “Presidential”, what does that even mean? A President is not King, he is an employee of the people. If you want someone not acting “Presidential” look at Obama who represented illegals and terrorists more than the US people. Or Hillary, THAT is who they wanted as next POTUS? A woman whose got more skeletons in her closet than Jeffrey Dahmer on a binge? There is not one single solitary crime on the books that woman has not been involved in in some way or another and that’s “Presidential” to them? She should be doing LIFE in prison right now! Former Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich is doing FOURTEEN years for merely CONSPIRING to commit a pay for play while the Clintons, Hillary in particular, has actually done it God knows how many times. And then you have the espionage act violations and then the blatant theft of the Haitian aid money. WHY is this woman even walking around right now?
