John says we're up but we still have some configuration problems, but they're going to have to wait until he gets home (3 hours). His laptop is not working and the only way he can get in is by his phone and that's giving errors. He's afraid others on mobile devices may be getting errors too. We're on a new version of the db software now and apparently there are some compatibility issues. And we're sporting some new drives including a new SSD (solid state) drive. Should be working pretty good after he works out the configuration problems, then he has to finish the sha-256 installation for security for credit cards. Then on to a total redesign of the system. It never ends.
Thank you all very much for hanging in there with us.
God bless.
The squirrel died. R.I.P. Not surprising though; we’ve been running the poor creature pretty ragged for the past two years.
Now, as the dust settles, can we have a sober discussion on current server practices--redundancy, rollovers, and NOT local to drive to 3+ hours away, and going to Frys or somewhere for parts. Not to be critical but that is fine for your home computer but not a Web site, especially one with the high visibility of Free Republic. The funds that many of us contribute easily pay for this. Heck, my company pays less than $2,500 A YEAR and have redundancy, rollover, and never downtime more than moments.
Jim, you know my business. Happy to connect you with like minded network folks that can get this done. Message or email me.
Thank you all so much for work so hard to get FR back up and runnng. Feels good to be “home”.
Thank you....I couldn’t take much more. LOL.
Good to see FR back up. BTTT.
Thank you!
Certainly the cloud uses hardware, but it is the responsibility of the host to ensure redundancy and uptime commitments, that is normally transparent to the clients.
Seems to be working fine on the iPhone. Thank you so much for all the time and effort that you guys put into this forum.
Just a suggestion though...why not host FreeRepublic in the Cloud? Physical servers (and all the headaches they bring you and John) are so...90s.
You could coin a new acronym!
CaaS...."Conservatism as a Service".
I call them F___Book. :-)
High fives for getting FR up and running.
our thanks are to you!
Looking pretty good from this end.
Hope I don’t break anything... :-0
I’d wager a double (triple?) fault in a disk RAID group. Just a SWAG.

Jim, I suggest you put Free Republic on a true web hosting service. Let the web hosting service deal with bandwidth and hardware issues, not you.
HAHAHAHA
Well I’ll not lie, I am super glad to see FreeRepublic back up. I gripe sometimes and for sure there’s plenty more out there on the web.
So let me take a moment and say what I really like about FreeRepublic.
Can’t get a better layout for posts. There isn’t a web site out there that is as easy and simple to read and follow as FreeRepublic.
I think the comment section and methodology is above par. I like that you can hit a code and it takes you back to who you are commenting to. So much better than Facebook, which confuses me to a gnarly end.
I would not change the front page or the comment area but I’d consider getting an “ignore” key and for sure factor in the ability of people to delete or edit their own comments.
Having to get an admin moderator is a bit of a pain when the system hiccups and posts five bazillion of the same post.
Not really a big deal but since you asked.
And lookit, if Bloggers are not allowed, or whatever this “Vanity” thing is....why not just disallow them? Maybe make people sign up for the ability to make such posts? Is sending out a grump to be mean and nasty the way to go on this?
Anyway, I quite enjoyed the FB time span, getting to see pics of other Freepers, learning about them.
I do contribute every year to Fr as it’s worth it for the simplicity and excellence of the design.
I know nothing about cloud drives or databasis but if money is a factor why not just charge people to use the system that assurance is made to have needed funds?
Just some thought from one who means well.
Thanks for working so hard to get the site back. I really missed it.
Good job, Finally up.
Fox News is gone. Tucker is not making it. The View is a waste of time. Hannity is on too late for me. I refuse anything of MSM “news” or “entertainment” programming. Sorry to be so negative, but when FR went down I’ve been dangling. WELCOME BACK FR.
