SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea elected Moon Jae-in, a human rights lawyer who favors dialogue with North Korea, as president on Tuesday, returning the nation’s liberals to power after nearly a decade in the political wilderness and setting up a potential rift with the United States over the North’s nuclear weapons program.
His victory caps a remarkable national drama in which a corruption scandal, mass protests and impeachment forced a South Korean president from office for the first time in almost 60 years, leaving the conservative establishment in disarray and its former leader in jail.
Mr. Moon, 64, a son of North Korean refugees, faces the challenge of enacting changes to limit the power of big business and address the abuses uncovered in his predecessor’s downfall. He must also make good on his promise of a new approach to North Korea while balancing relations with the United States and China.
His election also scrambles the geopolitics over North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. Even as the Trump administration urges the world to step up pressure on Pyongyang, it now faces the prospect of a critical ally — one with the most at stake in any conflict with the North — breaking ranks and adopting a more conciliatory approach.

Let the South Korean’s deal with the consequences of their own decisions unless NK actually credibly threatens the US. Then destroy the NK nuke sites and government and let South Korea deal with the short lived NK attack.
Modern North Korea is a creation and client of China—they weren’t going to give up that cudgel anyway. They were just stringing us along.
It wasn’t a minor BS scandal, the president was brainwashed and part of a cult and literally had this Rasputin like woman dictate policy through her, on top of embezzling funds and firing staff who weren’t favorable to her influence.
It's the Frank Zappa effect. Moon's opponent simply had no chance of defeating his offspring, especially with a name like hers. ;-)

It’s actually quite fascinating to read because it’s one of those stories were truth is stranger than fiction.
It all stems from a North Korean hit squad that stormed the blue house trying to kill her father and murdered her mom in the cross-fire. She fell under the influence of this cult leader (who is now dead, the new leader is his daughter) who said he spoke with her ghost.
Some people are now saying that her father’s assassination which was always mysterious in terms of motive now is his head of intelligence was alarmed by this cult leader’s influence and Park’s refusal to intervene.
It’s pretty insane.
Wow, electing a leader with family and historical ties to the norks with a groveling peacenik mood to the butterball that wants to ‘talk’ to the nork psycho. Why that’s like us electing an unknown with muzzie background, commie friends, reads commie lit. WAIT, we did that already and know how that turned out. With butterball already threatening to nuke the south, if this new SK preezy doesn’t use a ‘I have a backbone’ approach with the norks, our troops need out of there like NOW as they are just 30,000 hostages to be aka USS Pueblo on a grand scale and this new prez could hand them to the norks on a platter.
