(The Trace) First, the National Rifle Association worked to let gun owners carry firearms in public. Then it fought to pass laws that say gun carriers can open fire to stop a perceived threat, even when retreat is possible.
Now that the NRA has expanded the legal right to armed self defense, its muscling into the niche industry thats arisen to help Americans deal with the costly consequences of actually exercising it. This week, the group unveiled insurance plans that it says will help defray the legal costs that can arise from shooting another person.
As the NRA prepares to convene its annual meeting this weekend in Atlanta, the group is aggressively marketing the new product, which it calls Carry Guard . Offering three tiers of coverage, the service gives customers access to a financial and logistical backstop should they use their gun while claiming self defense. Theres liability insurance, ranging up to $150,000 in criminal-defense reimbursement and $1 million in a civil-liability protection for those opting for the top-shelf Gold package, which runs $31.95 per month. Members also get a 24-hour advice hotline and immediate access to money for bail and clean-up costs.

Good idea!
I guess it makes sense in certain jurisdictions where legit gun owners are more at risk of being screwed by the courts for self defense, or in a higher crime area. Sad.
Anybody remember the commercials on Hannity’s radio show? Might still be going on.
I can’t buy it now but if I shoot somebody could it be like a pre-existing condition and I can still get coverage? I have bad eyesight and am less likely to hit my target so can I get a discount?
The NRA didn't give me the right of armed self defense. God did that.
I’d call it winning. The sniveling tears of the clowns that wrote this tripe are the icing on the cake.
The only valid understanding of the principle that “retreat is possible” occurs within the “theater of the mind” of the prosecutor. I could see a lawyer being needed to change that initial understanding.
Imagine that, the NRA making money off of other people....
Amen to that and pass the loaded AR
There are also at least three others doing so.
It is good to compare all of them and see which works best for each person.
Do you have to have the insurance prior to shooting someone???
It’s a great idea. If a case comes up, they can get the best lawyers to defend homeowners.
You have to be paying already beforehand. You can’t blast a thug breaking into your house and then call to get coverage.
I’ve been using Second Call Defense for years. Same idea.

I’m surprised most people don’t know about self defense insurance/memberships.
This even applies in states with strong “self-defense immunity” laws (from criminal prosecution or civil litigation), because you might still have to go to court and be determined to be immune before the immunity is in effect.
Gotta love this line:
“Then it fought to pass laws that say gun carriers can open fire to stop a perceived threat, even when retreat is possible.”
Stand Your Ground must really give ‘em the vapors.
Take a looksee.
The local (Oregon) CC instructor says to plan on $20,000 for clear and simple self defense.
20 thousand? You’d have to be a Bernie Goetz to have any use for it.
