Facing nearly two dozen federal fraud and conspiracy charges, former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown took the stand in her own defense on Thursday, saying she was left in the dark while her former chief of staff siphoned thousands of dollars from what prosecutors are calling a sham charity.
The Florida Democrat told the jury she was betrayed by her former top aide, Elias “Ronnie” Simmons. “I loved Ronnie Simmons like a son,” said Brown, crying. “A lot of young people in this community end up in jail. I never would’ve wanted that to happen to Ronnie.”
Federal prosecutors want Brown to go to jail for a scheme to raise more than $800,000 for the One Door for Education Foundation, which promised that the money would go to help poor kids with scholarships and computers. Instead, the charity gave only $1,200 out in scholarships while Brown, Simmons and the foundation’s president Carla Wiley spent funds on a lavish lifestyle, according to their indictments.
Brown also is charged with lying on her taxes about charitable donations the government said she never made, and falsifying her congressional financial disclosure forms. …

This has been going on for over a year. We in North Florida are very well aware of it and yes, if you have not seen it in South Florida, the media is the reason. But, it has been on several threads on FR over the past year.
She actually ran for re-election with these charges already hanging over her head but did lose in the Primary. Then, they flipped Ronnie for a plea deal. She is toast.
So far, no immediate island tipping or Mars flag comments from Al Lawson.

I distinctly remember a period — back in the late '60s — during which "Black is Beautiful" was a big thing. Black women in the media all wore their hair in a style called an "afro."
There were media stories about how Black people should be proud of their appearance, including their hair.
Seems to me that lasted (at most) ten years, maybe less. Perhaps it was during the disco period (Donna Summer?) in which it went into the memory hole. They got it to stick during the period of high "Black Consciousness," but it wasn't sustainable.
So they can look like the white women they hate.
