California lawmakers vote for earlier primary elections

California may hold its presidential primary elections three months earlier after lawmakers passed bills Thursday to increase the influence of the nation’s most populous and diverse state.

Supporters of the bills say the state’s June primary doesn’t give California voters enough say in who becomes president because it occurs so late on the calendar. The state’s 2016 primary occurred after Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had already become the presumptive nominees for Republican and Democratic parties.

An earlier primary would give Californians greater influence in the nomination decisions, said Assemblyman Kevin Mullin, who authored the Assembly bill. “California has largely been a non-factor when it comes to selecting candidates,” the San Francisco-area Democrat said. “AB84 will enable more Californians to be politically relevant in presidential election cycles.”

Both houses of the state Legislature approved measures to change the state’s primary date from June to March. The Senate bill would move the primary to the third Tuesday that month, while the Assembly bill would move the election to the first or second Tuesday. …

Well, they’re right, it was over by the time it got there.

We need to streamline the primary process.

The primary was in June many years ago when I lived there.

I always used to say, “The most populous state in the country plays no role in the nominating process.”

Then, after I left, they moved the primary to March.

Then they moved it back to June.

Now they want to move it to March again.

I wish these idiots would make up their mind already.

While it might not be good for the 49 other states, it’s the right move for California.

But with the one move, will exclude all but the best funded and more liberal candidates from both the Democratic and Republican primaries.

The article is totally wrong, CA is not the most DIVERSE state in the U.S.
It’s totally a progressive libtard bullshit state. I’m totally surprised it has not died yet.

I think that this move means that Nancy Pelosi is going to try and run for president 2020. this move is designed to give an advantage to a California candidate.

most populous and diverse state.

LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE

California might be the most populous state, but it's about as diverse as a Borg Hive Mind.

The first primary election should always be scheduled on the first Tuesday after Election Day.

When was that? I’ve been voting here since the 70s and I don’t remember it ever not being in June.

Hillary took 254 delegates to Bernie’s 221. If anything, California voting in March would have elevated Bernie. The only thing that helped Hillary was her 66 unpledged delegates.

Notice when talking about the election, no one mentions that Hillary was so flawed that she needed the unpledged delegates to beat Bernie. Without those delegates, the race would have been close enough for people to see how bad Hillary really was.

To put it into perspective, the Antifa’s should be railing against the Democrat establishment and not the Republican. We didn’t steal the election from Bernie. Hillary did. And that’s one of the main reasons Trump won.

As a single party state the California primary being earlier will impact only the Democrats in election year.

I could have sworn that the California presidential primary was, for a brief period of time, held in March at some point during the last 20 - 25 years.

Maybe it was just a proposal in the state Assembly or state Senate in Sacramento that went nowhere at the time.

I just looked it up and saw that primaries for the office of California governor were held in March or June until 2008, when they were held in February. Perhaps that was what I was thinking of.

I voted myself in many California elections when I lived there years ago, both federal, state and local; I remember the good ‘ole days when California routinely was carried by the Republican in the presidential race.

MACGA (Make California Great Again)!

California has bounced its primaries up and down the calendar for the last 30 some years. Hasn’t made any difference. If California wants to have influence again in national politics, it needs to restore closed party primaries, redistrict to enable a fairer Republican participation in local and national elections, and toss out its far left Marxist moonbats. It also has to want to be part of the United States again instead of Northern Mexico.

Well, it will have the effect of frightening the rest of America's Republicans...

Kamala Harris, the freshman US Senator from that state is about to get a big push by the Dem powerbrokers. They’re thinking a female version of Obama will be the solution in 2020 to their electoral problems. A black freshman senator from a large blue state and a lawyer. Can’t you see the parallels between Harris and Obama? The only difference is their gender. I’m telling you this is the candidate the Dems will push hard to be president. They figure they can hit paydirt with Harris the way they did with the former preaident.
