Col. Leo K. Thorsness, one of the most highly decorated American airmen of the Vietnam War and a belated recipient of the Medal of Honor for his heroism on a mission that took place 11 days before he was shot down and taken prisoner, died Tuesday in Jacksonville, Fla. Colonel Thorsness, who had been brutalized during his six years of captivity at the notorious North Vietnamese prison known as the Hanoi Hilton, where he was a cellmate of John McCain’s, was 85.
His death was announced by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, which said he had been treated for cancer. Colonel Thorsness, who lived in St. Augustine, Fla., died at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, WHNT News 19 in Huntsville, Ala., reported. He had been living in Alabama before moving to Florida.

Leo Thorsness was a Washington state senator. I was fortunate to work at the legislature for part of that period as a committee staff analyst.
He was the ultimate gentleman and gentle man in how he dealt with both parties and from the mail room to the governor.
A little trivia about Leo - in the film “Hanoi Hilton”, Leo had a cameo as the officer greeting the POW’s upon their return to the US.

I just did a google search "McCain...POW...video" and came up with a recording allegedly of him telling his Commie captors how bad the US was,how bad his war crimes were and how wonderful they had been to him.If that is,in fact,him and that audio hasn't been altered in any way he sounds to me like a damn traitor.
I wonder if the authenticity of that recording has ever been credibly confirmed.

Well, damn. I live in ‘Bama, and frequent a restaurant in St. Augustine right next to the Legion hall there. I always wanted to flash my card at the door and go in for a cold one. I may have met him. Too bad this fine man couldn’t have done one last great act for his country, and taken McLame with him.
My dad, an F-105 pilot, died from MDS-Leukemia. God bless them all. ‘The world is a lesser place.’
