Open-Space-Laws, Skyrocketing-Prices Nanny State PING!
But uh, that's not where the jobs are.
Mr. Kotkin is right but conveniently forgets to mention the elephant in the room: Mass immigration.
That's why the competition for space is so severe, in addition to the selfish land use laws (when does Los Altos Hills open up and let the unwashed masses in?).
Now that ten million Mexicans (low estimate) have walked in over the last 30 years, which Mr. Kotkin was all for back in 2001, we have to pave paradise to give them breeding space?
How bout just ending mass immigration into the United States? Focus on jobs and housing for the Americans?
Other than her parents, she has very little emotional ties to California or the Bay Area. While it was sad to see her move that far away, she is enjoying her life. Most millennials in the Bay Area don't look all that happy, and that includes those fortunate to find employment.
but but but wasn't that the entire goal of 'sustainability'?
They’ll probably raise taxes on people under 35.

At the low end you have 20+ illegal aliens crowding into a typical suburban home, wrecking entire neighborhoods. At the high end you have Chinese nationals paying cash for homes that they leave vacant. Caught in the middle are Americans trying to find something that they can afford in a neighborhood that hasn’t turned into a crime ridden 3rd world ghetto.
I was watching some show on “Tiny Houses”, this guy paid over 500 K for an itsy bitsy house in the heart of San Fran, no bedroom, no parking, and only a minifridge.
