Diet soda is getting more bad publicity. PepsiCo said this week that its latest quarter was boosted by guilt-free products such as diet soda and bottled water, as consumers move away from sugary drinks, but more research is casting a pall over artificially-sweetened beverages too.
Artificially sweetened beverages may be linked to an increased risk of stroke and dementia, according to a recent study by the American Heart Associations peer-reviewed journal Stroke. The researchers looked at 2,888 people over the age of 45 (with a median age of 62) for stroke risks and 1,484 people over the age of 60 (with a median age of 69) for risk of dementia. After adjustments were made for age, sex, education, caloric intake, diet, exercise, and smoking, they found that diet soda drinks were associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke, all-cause dementia, and Alzheimers disease dementia. (The study cites correlation rather than causation.)

So it’s OK to drink “baby squeezin’s” and not feel guilty about it now?
Rather than use artificial sweeteners, why don't they go back to using cane sugar. That is an authentic sweetener.
I feel no guilt when I crack open an ice cold Mountain Dew. My wife suffers enough “that’s not healthy” guilt for both of us.
My guilt-free Pepsi is the Pepsi Throwback, made with cane sugar. Tastes lighter and crisper than the fructose-syrup goo we get sold as soda these days - just like it used to taste when I was a kid (and yeah, I tried a blind test, just out of curiosity - I could tell the difference and so could my wife).
Calories!
Pepsi is getting some really bad marketing advice these days.
I don’t like soda, and I’m glad I never acquired a taste for it. I am thoroughly convinced that Big Food IS trying to kill us.
OTOH, I fully support the choices of others when it comes to what they choose to eat. :)
Back when I was working, I’d probably do 2x16 ounce cokes every day. Now, I rarely drink any soda at all. Lots of water now. I guess I feel better. I also quit smoking 4 weeks ago for Mrs. rktman’s birfday. Heck yeah I want a cig but that’s one of those promises you DO NOT break. ;-)
Good for you! Good Luck! :)
How about using pure leaf extract Stevia? That’s all you need do. Coke “Life” uses both Stevia and cane sugar for 90 calories.
When die-t soda came out I had one sip and knew it was poison. ...they should have added cancer to list.
Bottled water is a racket. I just re-use the bottle and fill it from the water fountain.
At some point, you will get past the “I want to smoke” stage and into the “I hate smoking” phase.
I was amazed when I could taste food again. Wow!
I smoked for 10 years and quit. All I did was walk when I got a craving.
But mostly I convinced myself that if I ever picked up another cigarette, I was the biggest p*ssy to ever walk the Earth.
10 years later, I took up cigars but I only smoke one every year or so.
