The Ohio governor ran for the Republican nomination and lost. Now, in his new book and on the road, he's critical of the party and frequently noting the day will come when an independent could win the presidency. Is there space for Republicans like John Kasich in the party anymore?
Is John Kasich still a Republican?
The Ohio governor and mainstay of the partys mainstream is out this week with a book that at times reads like an angry breakup letter.
Oh yeah, Im a Repub , Kasich trailed off, conspicuously unable to finish the word in his rapid-fire stream of consciousness from the front seat of a big SUV barreling toward New Hampshire on Wednesday night. Kasich finished second in the states hugely important presidential primary last year. That was enough to make it one of the few high points of his campaign and, also conspicuously, one of the first book-signing stops on his national tour.
Im pro-environment, Im pro-trade, Im anti-debt, Im pro-immigration, Im pro-NATO, Kasich continued. And when I look at the party, I see it moving in a different direction. But Ive always said I have the right to define what it means to be a Republican and a conservative.
At a time when he clearly wants to remain a player on the national stage, Kasich is struggling with his political identity and so is his party. If and where he fits in a GOP led by Donald Trump will say a great deal about the kind of Republicans who can succeed in it, and whether theres still space for the open and internationalist values Kasich and other Republicans long have cherished.

Most of us have been over Kasich for awhile now.
Works for me. ‘Bye, John.
This ahole needs to get out of GOP and get out of politics entirely. And into a mental asylum

Sounds like he breaks the speeding laws there like he does in Ohio.
He needs his Haldol prescription renewed from the November elections.
Bye! Bye!
Don't let the door hitcha!
Why do we see periodic articles such as this, about identity crises within the GOP, but never hear such stories about Democrats???
The Democrats have moved markedly left in recent decades, but nobody in the media talks about that.
could JFK be nominated as a Democrat presidential candidate today??? Would a JFK fit into today’s Democrat party? That sort of question is never asked.
I have heard that Hubert Humphrey believed in strong family values, and decried the growth of the permanent welfare state, accompanied by growing numbers of out of wedlock births and single mothers. He was a strong liberal in his day, but would he fit into today’s Democrat party???

So is Trump, but the difference is Trump wants to use his negotiating and business skills to purge the corruption out of those areas.
When Kasich says he’s pro-immigration, doesn’t anybody with sense read that as pro-illegal-immigration?
Kasich ans PRyno are blood brothers.
I heard his father was a mailman.
Kasich made his choice. He refused to endorse Trump for President despite signing a pledge to do so. He boycotted the GOP nominating convention despite it being held in Ohio. He did no campaigning for Trump. In sum, he did everything he could to defeat Trump.
Trump won Ohio by 1.5 million votes, i.e., 51.31% to 43.24%. Kasich is term limited. He has no future in the GOP. He cut himself out of the GOP. It is not a matter of the GOP finding a space for him and others like him, e.g., Jeb Bush.
No. John Kasick (K-sick) is NOT a Republican. At best, he’s a Republican in Name Only, aka RINO. Someone like Kasick could be welcome in the Republican party, but he’d have to learn to stick with the party majority versus siding with Democrats, aka McCain style.
The problem with these moderate/centrists is they think the conservatives should kowtow to them. Yet, conservatives are the largest faction in the GOP, and they deserve to control the GOP agenda. The moderate/centrists need to support conservatives when we have these in-party conflicts and the majority decides to support the conservative agenda.
Sadly, we cannot count on their votes, but they sure expect ours when it serves their interests. And that is why the Republican Party is falling apart. Democrats at least know enough to support their team no matter what.
RE: I heard his father was a mailman.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard it....
And you’re a Pro Idiot, Johnny Boy
Hey, given the way you’ve changed course the past few years, what have the Dims and NSA et al got on you anyway?
Transparency, John, transparency.
LOL! *HE* has the right to define what it means to be a Republican and a conservative! *HIM!*!!!
And so far, he's said being a Republican and a conservative consists of:
There was THAT rumor! :)
