ISTANBUL — A Russian naval intelligence ship sank Thursday after colliding with a merchant freighter in the Black Sea near Istanbul, the Turkish coast guard said. All 78 crew members on the Russian vessel were rescued.

The crew of the freighter, a Togo-flagged ship traveling from Romania to Jordan and carrying 8,800 sheep, was unharmed and the ship suffered slight damage to its bow, according to local media reports.

In Moscow, Russia's Defense Ministry issued a statement confirming that the vessel, the Liman, went down after the collision tore a hole in the hull below the waterline.

"Odd. Who caused the collision?"

You think Turkey pulled the wool over their eyes?

We have no idea which ship had the right of way, but according to the article the Russian vessel was struck by the bow of the other ship. So, it’s odd that the intelligence ship didn’t have someone on the radar who noticed the sheep ship coming in on a constant bearing. Not very alert for an intelligence ship.

Odd. Who caused the collision?

There are rules of the road, written and unwritten. One of the unwritten ones is law of gross tonnage. If you are a small boy, don't expect a large merchant ship to give way to you, especially in constricted waters, even if you have right-of-way.

And 8,800 Turks threatened to leave the country since "date nite" had been cancelled !

Still no mention of the ocean depth where she went down. Google Maps shows a number of undersea canyons and ridges on the ocean bottom. Hope it's in water shallow enough for divers. If not, it could take a while to get submersibles out there.

If she's in shallow water I have a feeling some guys in suburban Mosul got a phone call last night saying something like "Guys, you're going up north for a little swim."

It’s called the General Prudential Rule. Whichever vessel can take action to avoid a collision, regardless of their status as Stand-on or Give-way vessel, must take that action.

Since the ship and cargo were undamaged, 8,800 Jordanian bridegrooms were not disappointed.

Where is Howard Hughes when we need him? Glomar Explorer.

Ain't gonna happen. James Cameron already has the movie rights and has the "Alvin' filming the wreck as we speak. He has signed Leonardo DiCaprio to play "Ivan Ivanovich" the dashing captain of the Russian Spy Ship.

First, Ivan gets Boris into a vodka drinking contest. Once Boris passes out, Ivan begins to 'romance' Natasha. However, their love is unrequited, as their ship is rammed by the Turkish freighter, 'just as things are getting interesting..."

The movie begins with an aged Natasha reminiscing to the women on The View....

One summer, when I was in college, my roommate and I were in a Sailfish between Norfolk and Hampton when we suddenly noticed an aircraft carrier coming towards us from the direction of the Newport News Shipyard. I told my roommate, the more experienced sailor, that we needed to pick up speed and he replied, “Don’t worry; we’ve got the right of way.”
