Trump changes course on NAFTA, drops threat to back out

U.S. President Donald Trump has backed off a plan to start the process of withdrawing from the North American free-trade agreement after emergency talks with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

The White House had been considering an executive order that would have taken the first step toward pulling the U.S. out of NAFTA, senior officials told U.S. media outlets. The directive, drafted by National Trade Council director Peter Navarro and chief strategist Steve Bannon, was ready to be signed later this week or early next. But after word of the order came out in the media Wednesday, Mr. Trump spoke with Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Pena Nieto by telephone late in the afternoon and abruptly dropped his threat to tear up the deal.

Trump wrote the book on negotiations. He really did. The US has elected a genius, a master negotiator, a man who knows people, business, and the economy inside out.

Canada elected an effete dilettante feminist proto man whose coddled existence does not prepare him for negotiating with the likes of Donald Trump. How do you think this is going to end?

Trump was merely using one of his more effective negotiation ploys. Threaten to kick over the table, then the other players will sit down for a more honest shuffle and dealing out of the cards.

Just one of a number of tactics and strategies the The Donald has applied over the years. And most of them turn out to be highly successful.

But the threat remains on the tab...always.

So Canada...let's talk about dumping wood again....cuz we have trees in the US, too.

He said we’d renegotiate it if we didn’t leave on the campaign trail. I won’t give him a pass on the wall though.

We are going to immediately repeal and replace obamacare.
But some people put up resistance so maybe later.

We are going to immediately stop the flow of refugees and muslims. But a judge put up some resistance so maybe we will do it later.

We are going to build a wall immediately. But some people didn’t want to do it so maybe we will do it later.

We will immediately pull out of Nafta. But the other parties don’t want to do it so maybe later..

Charlie Brown, Lucy, Football all over again.

Huff, puff cry, cave. Business as usual.

Trump can always erect a toll gate.

Oh sure, they’ll claim they can do it too but the reality is the USA can take their tariff and reduction of trade much better than a much smaller nation.

Mexico has 135 million people with a GDP of $1.3 trillion. Yawn. Texas or California have GDP greater than mexico.

Canaduh has a population of 35 million and a GDP of $1.7 trillion. About on par with Texas or California.

The use of the products from either country are spread throughout the United States and absorbed by a nearly $18 trillion dollar economy.

Who is the big dog trying to be fair or the little dog trying to take advantage?

Can we use timber from Canaduh? Sure, but we got more than they do and access to more of it year round.

Oil and Mexico? Maybe we keep fracking and they can frack off or maybe they wanna deal and not risk upsetting the “Harmony” of Mexico and it’s 135 million citizens and paltry GDP.

They are already experiecing emmigration of dissatisified citizens, loss of control of huge swaths of land to the Narcos and they really can’t feed themselves without the American Farmer.

Yeah, I think we can get a better deal...

Anyone who thought President Trump was ever going to withdraw from NAFTA was kidding themselves.

Trump has not changed his mind at all or change course. Its the same course he advocated during the campaign. He’s going to renegotiate NAFTA. If he doesn’t get a good deal, he pull out. Media is lying again

Many of us here knew what we were getting but we were not allowed to say it without being swarmed. Too big a risk of Goldman Sachs winning the election, doncha know.

Exactly, but it won’t stop the corrupt media from putting a negative spin on it.
