I think we are GROSSLY overestimating the capabilities of the North Koreans. I think they are using the bluster to make us fear a "liberating ground invasion" of South Korea in order to gain food and the ability of Fat Boy to stay in power.

Either that, or he's truly insane and it's just a matter of time before they have deployable nuclear weapons. If they can't "find" an aircraft carrier at sea, what makes us believe they can launch a missile half way across the continent and actually hit something?

The Chinese a couple of years ago claimed to have a long range missile that was designed to sink a carrier. If the gave some to N Korea, who knows.

They would not be able to hit anything, but would you want a nuke to go off in the ocean near Japan?

What would be the EMP results, what would be the possible tsunami effects, etc.?

That is the real danger. Kim does not have to actually hit anything to cause a huge number of possible problems.

“North Korea Threatens to Sink a U.S. Carrier. Could They?”

Yes. Anything is possible. The NORKs use fishing boats for intel. Carriers are often spotted by fishermen in the open ocean. Plus there are literally hundreds of boats/ships in the area that get on the radio and tell all on the channel where the US war ships are.

Please remember that the Serbs shot down a stealth bomber using human assets to aid tracking. Spies and saboteurs are about so low tech can win a battle within a war.

Much agreed. The Norks are incapable of manufacturing anything else, how reliable are their arms? I've read on the rare occasions they "sell" medical supplies (hypodermic needles and gauze) to the Chicoms, they basically just burn it and are glad to get a rail car back.

It's one thing to have all 300 of your top scientists and engineers, working around the clock for weeks if not months to conduct a test under the most ideal conditions. Staging a tactical strike while under withering fire from our air and ocean forces is another thing all together.

What can help us believe is the fact the Norks have satellites orbiting above the United States.

Maybe they could do it once, but after that the survivors of Chairman Dumpling’s utopia would be pineing for the good old days of tree bark soup.

They probably do have that capability. However, having the capability and being able to execute it are not the same. They can definitely load up some of their single man submarines with explosives and suicide the carriers, but could they get close enough to do that?

“I think we are GROSSLY overestimating the capabilities of the North Koreans.”

I’ve been wondering that too. I mean this people can’t even produce or manufacture a light bulb (not that they need them). But their “capabilities” have been coming from their pals, not from their own abilities—Bill Clinton comes to mind.

China has sponsored, supported and armed the Norks, who threaten to nuke US cities and carriers.

Why don’t we give nukes to Taiwan, South Korea and Japan and see what China does if they threaten to nuke China.

That would be only fair, no?

Imagine if Taiwan were run by a apocalyptic madman and we nuclear armed him - that is basically what China has done with fat Kim.

There is a concept called “technological surprise” or “technological conceit”.

There is no way a competent slinger can defeat an armored man with a lance. How could these primitives possibly orbit a satellite before we can? How cold these primitives possibly photograph the far side of the moon? How could these primitives land a robot on Venus? How could they possibly knock down a tall building in New York? How could they possibly kill or maim a thousand US soldiers with pressure cookers?

Poverty and lack of resources can be great incentive for innovation, sometimes world-changing innovation.

So naturally there is no way the North Koreans could take out a carrier! We have radars! Satellites! Fighter patrols! Sonar!

A lot of speculation whether they can hit us.

Yes, they probably CAN. They have missiles that CAN reach out and sink ships.

Its important to note that The Vinson and it's Ticonderoga class cruiser and 2 Arleigh Burke destroyers are all armed with Phalanx CIWS, Sea Sparrows, Rim-116s. The cruiser and destroyers are all Aegis equipped .

Basically, the best anti-ship missile defense system.

The defense capabilities are 3 layers (4 if you consider electronic counter measures)
First are medium range SAMs,
Then ECMs and Sea Sparrows or RAMs, lastly the Phalanx CIWS.

With the Aegis system, 1-single ship is very capable on its own. The Aegis allows detection and engaging multiple targets.
Combined with more ships detection and tracking increases as well as launch capabilities.

Everybody seems to be running around with wringing hands.
This is war and never under estimate your enemy.

At the same time know your enemy's strengths and weaknesses.

Fatman is very limited in equipment, even if Chinese provided. Even if he has ability to detect and track our ships and if he has a top notch missile to reach our ships, that missile would have to penetrate 3 layers of missile defense, provided by 3 Aegis equipped ships.

Lil Kim will need more than one missile. More like Dozens.
