The White House sought Monday to calm a jittery Washington ahead of a showdown with Congress over spending, and President Trump softened his demand that a deal to keep the federal government open include money to begin construction on his long-promised border wall. Despite one-party control at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, the brinkmanship that came to define spending battles in the Obama years has tumbled into the Trump era, as have the factional divisions over strategy and priorities that have gripped the GOP for a decade. But with a Friday deadline looming to pass a new spending bill, the Trump administration projected confidence that a shutdown would be avoided. In the face of fierce Democratic opposition to funding the walls construction, White House officials signaled Monday that the president may be open to an agreement that includes money for border security if not specifically for a wall, with an emphasis on technology and border agents rather than a structure. Trump showed even more flexibility Monday afternoon, telling conservative journalists in a private meeting that he was open to delaying funding for wall construction until September, a White House official confirmed. The president is working hard to keep the government open, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters Monday. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said he was very confident that an agreement would be reached by Friday, but he pointedly said he could not guarantee that a government closure would be averted.

So what does everyone think, is Trump going to cave on the wall?
“So what does everyone think, is Trump going to cave on the wall?”
IMHO the wall will be built one way or another. Plenty of ways to fund the building of the wall.
It’s not because of Trump. It’s the republicans in Congress and I predict they will lose the Congress in 2018. Trump is doing everything to work with them but they are beyond help.
The Compost is spinning like a top.
The Wall will get built. This is just more Art of the Deal.
Help me understand why the Democrats have any say in this whatsoever. Doesn’t the GOP have all three branches of government? How can the Democrats shut anything down?
No idea, but I will say that the longer it takes to get it through Congress, the lower the chances are it will be done at all.
President Trump has his maximum momentum in the first six months of his Presidency, in terms of public support, political capital, and political will. After that, too many things crop up as distractions and/or excuses not to deliver.
Midterm elections, war, money, etc., all tend to be barriers to progress.
I still believe The Wall will be built, just not as soon as I would like it. Right now, we have other priorities to deal with, two in particular Tax Reform and Health Care Reform.
Get those two things done, and the rest will come more easily. Businesses want to start hiring more people, and probably will with less taxation staring them in the face.
It’s not worth going through the fake drama of
‘government shut down’ just to press the wall issue right now.
We already know that less illegals are crossing the borders today than a few months ago. So in some ways, President Trump is already on the right track, even before the physical wall has been put up.
He will absolutely not cave on the wall.
The Wall > All.
Fail that, fail all.
Anything from the cesspits known as MSM is tainted, fake, lying, mixed with crap, half the truth plus additional other stuff - unless and until I hear something from a reputable source, I don’t even read it, don’t set my hair on fire, and don’t clutch any pearls.
Trump is proposing closing about 20 government agencies. I bet he allows half of them to remain in exchange for funding for his wall.
Yup. Trump is doing all the heavy lifting, the rest are collecting paychecks, and some are even working against him.
Trump made the wall THE cornerstone of his campaign. If he allows Graham and the other losers in Club RINO to define what a wall means downward then Trump played us just like every other politician.
I don’t have to have it all funded by May, but if a wall is nothing more than a euphemism for more border security then we will have been screwed with Democrats totally winning. Border security funding can easily be demolished with the next Obama and we would be right back in the soup.
No sale. Build the wall or else the swamp wins and I pray every last Republican in Congress loses in 2018 with no amount of election year sloganeering being able to pull their lying backside out of the fire. And it will be a mid-term bloodbath.
I saw the Spicer Report today, and Sean said nothing about flexibility on the Wall, other than to say Mexico would eventually pay for it. Several of them tried to get him to say that, so I guess if they ask him a question a certain number of times and he doesn’t give them the answer they want, the just say he did. Very, very FAKE NEWS!
The wall will come!!
That could well happen. Too many people either forget or have never known how he negotiates. He has a hierarchy of goals and is using seemingly unrelated demands to achieve something that is his true goal.
I think he intends to deliver as promised on the big issues that he campaigned on. He just will get there in ways that aren’t a straight line.
The caving on the wall will guarantee Ossoff wins.
