Sadiq Khan adds weight to scheme to construct spartan apartments that will sell for up to 40% less than usual new-builds
Who needs internal walls or a fitted kitchen anyway? As house prices soar ever further out of reach, Londons mayor, Sadiq Khan, is to subsidise a new generation of ultra-basic naked homes that will sell for up to 40% less than standard new builds.
The apartments will have no partition walls, no flooring and wall finishes, only basic plumbing and absolutely no decoration. The only recognisable part of a kitchen will be a sink. The upside of this spartan approach is a price tag of between £150,000 and £340,000, in reach for buyers on average incomes in a city where the average home now costs £580,000.
The no-frills concept is to be be tested with 22 apartments on three sites in Enfield, north London, where the council will allow builders to take over derelict council estate garages and car parks. Khan has awarded a £500,000 grant to what he says will be the largest custom-build development in London. If successful, a further seven sites will be built.
Not a truly bad idea, some people would like to finish off the inside of their home themselves ... but the rendering is just sad. Is this supposed to sell the idea?
Some of the comments are great.
That’s not so bad.Put down carpet and finish the walls as your budget permitted.
And there could be communal toilets, and a place to barbecue the goats...
The average british home already isn’t a luxury place to live. Its nuts they will charge this much for even less.
I am also assuming this will be for invading muslim jihadis to live in as a base of operations. Will probably be a big step up for most of them. These places will be trashed and filled with exotic disease.
A Concrete Box = The Muslim dream Home
Cool...A one room apartment for 350,000 bucks......Hang some canvass on the walls and they’ll think they’re back home in a tent...
I’m sure that costs extra
seems like standard Soviet architecture to me - just a concrete cube. Very inspiring. /s
All that’s missing is the bars.
Perhaps the concept of load bearing walls is foreign...
...or these could be stealth bunkers inside the cities.
The invading army can set up shop and be secure when the final battle begins.
The best part, the British government pays for them with grants.
True, luxury items will. Like toilet paper-oh, that’s optional, if you have a left hand.
I’m in real estate. So let me just look at this idea in America. (It’s a great idea!)
It’s illegal to sell such a home here. They have these things called occupancy permits. Honestly, to hell with that. Build a shell and sell it. As long as it’s weatherproof, has working utilities and a furnace it’s good to go. You ensure the property is safe and will not get adversely affected by weather. Let the buyer fix up the inside as time and money permit. Besides, framing and drywall isn’t that hard to learn to do yourself. Ditto for adding your own kitchen cabinets and installing interior doors.
The cost of housing is outrageous. It’s a side effect of dual income families I think. Supply and demand right? People want to live in good communities and those that are 100% built-up just increase in price as buyer’s ability to pay goes up. Unfortunately it prices out many. Especially singles who do not have the dual income/fancy job, or a married couple that wants to have a stay at home mom.
This is a solution to help bring down housing prices. Another upside is the mortgage will be on the purchase price. The improvements done afterwards will be all equity.
Yes, I think it’s a good idea too. People used to build like this ... build a basic shelter and then finish it nicer on the inside, add on, etc as they had the fund to do it. I’d rather finish the interior of a house out myself anyway rather than buy someone else’s idea of what is a nice home.
Not for everyone but I’m sure there is a market for it.
London House Prices Post Biggest Annual Decline in Eight Years
I think it’s a great idea too. Before we bought the home we’re in I looked at tons of new homes. There was always something I didn’t like. Alot of times it was the layout. Rooms too big. Rooms too small. Where rooms were. In tracts that had 5 or 6 models there was always something I would have done different. No way around it unless you custom build one and who can afford that?
Yes, this is to facilitate - literally - the Muslim invasion.
