I’m in real estate. So let me just look at this idea in America. (It’s a great idea!)

It’s illegal to sell such a home here. They have these things called occupancy permits. Honestly, to hell with that. Build a shell and sell it. As long as it’s weatherproof, has working utilities and a furnace it’s good to go. You ensure the property is safe and will not get adversely affected by weather. Let the buyer fix up the inside as time and money permit. Besides, framing and drywall isn’t that hard to learn to do yourself. Ditto for adding your own kitchen cabinets and installing interior doors.

The cost of housing is outrageous. It’s a side effect of dual income families I think. Supply and demand right? People want to live in good communities and those that are 100% built-up just increase in price as buyer’s ability to pay goes up. Unfortunately it prices out many. Especially singles who do not have the dual income/fancy job, or a married couple that wants to have a stay at home mom.

This is a solution to help bring down housing prices. Another upside is the mortgage will be on the purchase price. The improvements done afterwards will be all equity.

Yes, I think it’s a good idea too. People used to build like this ... build a basic shelter and then finish it nicer on the inside, add on, etc as they had the fund to do it. I’d rather finish the interior of a house out myself anyway rather than buy someone else’s idea of what is a nice home.

Not for everyone but I’m sure there is a market for it.

I think it’s a great idea too. Before we bought the home we’re in I looked at tons of new homes. There was always something I didn’t like. Alot of times it was the layout. Rooms too big. Rooms too small. Where rooms were. In tracts that had 5 or 6 models there was always something I would have done different. No way around it unless you custom build one and who can afford that?
