President Trump's push for a big military buildup in legislation funding the government is likely to go unfulfilled next week, when Congress returns and quickly tries to agree on how to keep the government open after April 28.
A $578 billion bill that funds the Pentagon through September and provides some modest increases has already been hammered out by lawmakers in both chambers and passed by the House. While there is talk of a week-long extension before the big bill is passed, the main bill is likely to be the basis of all defense spending for the rest of the fiscal year.
That means debate over President Donald Trump's promised buildup and the defense budget for 2018 could be shelved until Congress starts working on the fiscal year 2018 appropriations plan. Trump has asked Congress for a $30 billion supplemental spending request for the Defense Department for the rest of the year.
"I think the most likely outcome is an omnibus appropriations bill that includes the defense appropriations bill very similar to what the House has passed," said Todd Harrison, the director of defense budget analysis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "That means that the supplemental [request] from the Trump administration is all but dead at this point."

578 billion? Isn’t that just about the same amount that Dr. Ben Carson discovered in waste, fraud and abuse at HUD?
I don't see a shut down of the government either...President Trump is very cagey and very smart and I think he has Congress in a position where they can't do anything but wonder what has happened since they have been on vacation...you see President Trump has been in the White House Working, and entertaining Foreign Leaders, and tending to the American Voters business...
They will stomp and cry and have every media, talking head and radio show hosts out screaming and yelling and writing ‘fake news’ but we know Our President is not beholden to anyone but the American Voter and he has been working his butt off for US!!!
GO.PRESIDENT TRUMP. GO!!! MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!
“..578 billion? Isnt that just about the same amount that Dr. Ben Carson discovered in waste, fraud and abuse at HUD?”
And add well OVER $100 BILLION wasted on illegal aliens each year.
Congress gives Trump his defense money...Congress gives Trump his border wall money...Or...
Trump shuts down government, cancels any pay increases for the next two years for government employees and stops any government paychecks going out...
roll call votes at thomas.loc.gov
I completely agree.
100%
Good post.
The way it works is the president proposes and Congress disposes.
President Trump can only ask for what he believes is necessary to defend this country. By asking for the money he has stood before the American people, his voters and in effect has said to them,”I am trying to do what I promised I would do too build up our military. It is in the hands of Congress now so all you out their need to let your elected official know where you stand on this.”
Big deal, Trump doesn’t have to run for re-election next year, those turds do. Let them go home and tell their voters they blocked the repeal of Obamacare, prevented Trump from spending more on defense and denied funds for the border wall...
They’ve got about a year to get with the program or start packing their crap.
Yes, but he has a pen and he has a phone.
This crap about no money for the wall is nuts - it would pay for itself instantly and the Dims know it, but they would lose future voters.
Its the people and Trump against all comers now.
We need to spend to maintain a sufficent nuclear deterrent, spend on strategic defense such as naval, air force and missile defense and spend a whole lot less on an army to “project power”, get us into quaqmires and make things easier for all our freeloading “allies” while not advancing the security of the US. Of course all that interferes with Congress’s private interest in being reelected.
