The amount goes beyond what Iran might need to replenish its stocks.
The Trump administration is facing pressure to definitively rule out a longstanding request by Iran to import 950 tons of natural uranium, according to government sources and proliferation experts who spoke to THE WEEKLY STANDARD. Tehran has signaled it will petition again for the yellowcake next week at a quarterly meeting in Vienna regarding implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal.
The Obama administration reportedly approved the Iranian request in its final weeks, but it was ultimately blocked by the United Kingdom. Iran has indicated of late that it will revive the request, setting up a key test for the Trump administration, which has placed the nuclear deal under a comprehensive review.

"Iran Wants to Import Tons of Uranium. Opponents of the Nuclear Deal Want the Trump Administration to Say No."
Why does a country so rich in oil need uranium for energy?
“Why does a country so rich in oil need uranium for energy?”
To make bombs.
They could buy it from Hillary.
Uranium doesn’t have a whole lot of uses other than refinement for either nuclear reactors or nuclear bombs.
“They could buy it from Hillary.”
LOL, good one.
FYI - U235, the isotope needed for a bomb appears in .72% of Uranium atoms which are normally U238.
Takes a lot to get a little. So one ton gets you 14 lbs.
The Hiroshima, Little Boy bomb had 140 lbs of U235 in it giving a blast yield of 15 Kilo tons of TNT.
So that is 10 tons of Uranium.
Uh duh.
Or give them shitloads of it. Pile it on a tarmac and then drop a MOAB on it so it’s a dirty bomb for them to inhale the vapor of their folly. Please enjoy.
It is not all done by refining. Enrichment is another way.
Another land mine left by Obama.
It is used in some chemical reactions. I remember using it way back in Chem 101 for some reaction.
Don’t forget it was all theoretical at that time and the process to extract it was basically trial and error, plus the whole plutonium process.
What great minds and people this country once produced. But thankfully this was all done before everyone had to have a college degree.
Historically it has been used for more mundane purposes such as adding color to pottery. And there are some modern uses such as in x-ray machines. But there are better substitutes that can’t also be turned into nuclear bombs. And depleted uranium for bullets is only gotten as a byproduct of separating it from its fissionable isotope.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info.
I haven't checked out the IAEA reports, but any idea what “facility” OS state they got there “natural” uranium from that had U236?
I searched Wikipedia on U236. It does support fission and won’t go boom, but it appears as a trace isotope in minimal quantiles, but comes from enriching U238 (natural) into U235 becoming a waste product.
You take U238 turn it into a gas at like 7000 degrees F then by spinning it in centrifuges the force from spinning separates the atoms and U238 is denser than U235.
Thanks 0bama for you underhanded Iran deal.
