At this rate, the United States is going to need immigrants of all kinds to continue growth.
A new Census Bureau study has just reported a sobering commentary on the current generation of young people.
“There are now more young people living with their parents than in any other arrangement…What is more, almost 9 in 10 young people who were living in their parents’ home a year ago are still living there today, making it the most stable living arrangement.”
It’s a factor largely of the economy, but also social mores and trends. The traditional lifetime pattern, you may recall, was for young people to leave their parents’ home for college or shortly after. After graduation, they got a job, set up their own accommodation and the usual courtship routine began. All this in their 20s.
Now, the Census reports, that process has largely been pushed into the 30s. Most still marry, but later, reducing the window for children in families.
But today the primary living arrangement between the ages of 18 and 34 is to live, spouseless, back in their parents’ home. That’s almost 23 million Americans, three million more than residing with a spouse.
And this has all happened rather quickly, as demographic changes go. As late as 2005, a majority of these young people lived independently in their own household, the dominant living arrangement in 35 states. Ten years later that was the case in only six states.
The states with the highest percentage of re-filled empty nests are concentrated on the coasts, while states with the lower percentages are in Mountain and Midwestern states.
Of those living with Mom and Dad, one-in-four is unemployed or not attending school. This mirrors a decline in the economic status of young men. In 1975, Census points out, only 25% of males between 25 and 34 earned less than $30,000 a year. Last year that percentage was a whopping 41%.
All of which is ominous economically in part because of the student debt situation. Not only have those with college loans grown from 17% in 1989 to 41% in 2013, but the size of the debts has nearly tripled.
Young people are still marrying at roughly the same rate, but older. Surveys show the ideal age most Americans consider for marriage is 25 with the young people graduated and supporting themselves. But today only 24% are married by then.
About 20 years ago women had a 59% chance of marriage by age 25. By 2010, that was down to 44%. Yet the percentage actually married by age 40 changed little, from 86% to 84%. All of this can delay having children, and reduce the number likely.
However, the Census study also revealed a stunning statistic that usually presages poverty: “Parenthood now precedes marriage for many women. Nearly 40% of all births in the United States are to unmarried women.”
Many young people with good college degrees cannot even find work after graduation and there are people who were laid off that can’t find work for a year or more. It is the economic way to circle the wagons for a family and live together until such time that the kids find work. I don’t think that anyone in that family is enjoying the situation. I know that at my church we pray for the unemployed that they may find work and I have been approached by tearful parents with the request to pray for their unemployed son/daughter.

I’ve put 3 of my 4 kids thru college and have just finished with my son in law. Him, my daughter and 2 grand kids have been living with me for about 7 years while he was in school. It’s a big house and I’m single, so I don’t mind them here. We all get along and he’s knocking down $70K/year paying me rent & utils.

They can’t get a good job because we lowered the import tariffs and let too many jobs and industries go overseas.

Close the border, and restore the tariffs. Use the tariff revenue to cut taxes. More Americans will be working and keeping more of their income and spending their income into the American economy. Win win win win win win win.

This is by design—the System creates so much debt and wastes 10 years of “teenagers’ life—keeping them DUMB AS STUMPS. People like Ben Franklin were working by 13 and was able to learn a trade to keep him wealthy (and free) for life. They were raising children by the time they were 22 or so, as God designed.
The Marxists wanted marriage and the Natural family destroyed since before Lenin who destroyed the marriage contract and made marriage meaningless, so it would be destroyed and the Natural family could be made obsolete, so they could destroy the common sense and virtue in all little children and warp their concepts of male/female to flip 2000 years of Christian Ethics. (Without Virtue, there is no freedom possible.). The Leftists want to eliminate billions of people so they want us not reproducing and want us all be interchangeable cattle/drones with no biological connections, for their toilet cleaners and factories. Since robots are becoming “normal”, they are ready to eliminate billions now (WWIII)..
Debt is ridiculous now for our children and the 7 years of “higher education” that my two oldest had were a WASTE OF TIME. IT MADE THEM DUMBER because “higher” education is now just an indoctrination and Party/debt thing.
Now, my sons did graduate in four years, then the 3 from law school, with the highest honors from Stanford, and great schools, but they DIDN”T LEARN HALF OF WHAT JEFFERSON KNEW OR FRANKLIN by age 14.
(Yes, I am yelling).
So, we set up a Marxist system of mass indoctrination, to get children away from the Natural family and reading Great Books, so that they can be warped for life and made into little socialists with the “group-(non) think” centers, so they become immoral, highly sexualized, and ignorant drones for the system. (They’ll never question the “system” with the indoctrination.)
Parents need to take back the minds of their children/grandchildren and bring in tutors and the Great Books /Bible to bring back the worldview which created the Founders and the greatest thinkers in the history of the World. This is the ONLY country which created individualism and Free Will/Bill of Rights—Individual Natural Rights only from God ONLY.
Everyone can take back their own children—from this satanic “culture”. Yes, it is hard, but it is worth it and can be done. The children need to learn philosophy, so they understand the ideology of Marxists and socialists and satanism (islam), to know how evil and dehumanizing those ideologies are. Only Christian worldview (Objective Truth) created free will and individualism (true freedom). All other ideologies are “collective” or tribal, so totally dehumanizing and not universal. Knowledge is Power-—that is why your graduates are so ignorant and brainwashed —incapable of critical thought/assessing facts, if they went through the “system”.

I would gladly take in my adult children under certain rules....no sleeping on the couch and we all don’t have to do everything together...
funny thing about marriage is that it actually improves your lot in life, if you can find the right spouse who has your values and work ethic....

There are winners and there are losers.
It used to be; no award for 2nd place, now we have an award for participation.
I love that novel too, as well as the rest of Waugh’s works.
I don’t think anyone takes this as good news, but after a few years of MAGA and putting American first, hopefully the trend will have reversed and opportunities will again exist for everyone who wants a job.
This is just another aspect of Obama’s legacy.
The politicians and their boss cronies run the factories out of the nation and we’re supposed to be shocked at this?
Merkel’s goal was to destroy German (white Christian) culture in Germany, and indirectly, Europe.
