He still had this hanging over his head (no pun intended) & at age 27, I suppose he didn't like the thought of the rest of his life in a jail cell:
Hernandez will remain in jail for life for his involvement in the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd. He was convicted of that murder in 2015 after a nine-week trial. Members of that jury found that Hernandez used "extreme atrocity or cruelty" in the killing.

Yes, but maybe the weight of his sins became too much for him. That's what the Accuser wants us to think - we've sinned so much there is no way out.
If only he knew of the forgiveness of Jesus - there are no sins too great that cannot be washed by Him - of course we still face the consequences, but they are not eternal.
Now they are.
