Sally Bedell Smith, dogged biographer and author of Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, out this week from Penguin Random House, has collected an exhaustive file of facts about the future king of England. Unlike his mother, Charles is not what you might call a beloved figure. And while Bedell Smith doesn't spare the touchy-feely, parapsychology loving, Dumbo-eared Charles, her portrait is also rich with sympathy, even affection.
Bullied as a youth by his overbearing father (Philip was the original alpha male, Smith says), Charles spent his whole life seeking approval. Cowed by a sense of duty and fearful of even minor mistakes, the well-intentioned, protocol-loving Charles married Diana because his father said he should. No matter that he may have been in love with Camilla Parker Bowlesshe didn't pass muster.

Yup. Most of it is technically just family money and assets — as in personal assets. There are some restrictions regarding certain properties, but those are rounding errors. And they’re worth enough money to make Bill Gates look like a pauper. (The reason they don’t show up on the Forbes 500 is because they don’t want to. Most of the truly uber rich don’t.)
The first time I saw this I couldn't stop laughing.
Nah. Prince Charles appears to be a fourth or fifth class twit. (He does not appear to me to reach even the level of a first class twit.)
Jiminy Cricket, Camilla Parker Bowles is a horse woman. I’d saw my leg of with a rusty spoon to stay away from her.
I agree with your sentiment but, personally, I like this song better.
The Queen Haters “I hate the Bloody Queen”.

“What, me worry?”
“Why does ANYBODY want a king or a queen?”
Because by any objective analysis countries today led by monarchies are the most stable, tolerant, decent, corruption-free, liberal (in the proper sense of the word), democratic nations on earth.
By a long chalk.
Let’s leave the US out of it and examine the rest of the world, contrasting monarchies against similar countries that are republics.
Which countries are better run today and have had better histories of government?
Canada or Russia?
The UK or France?
Norway or Latvia?
Sweden or Belarus?
Denmark or Poland?
Holland or Lithuania?
Australia or Argentina?
New Zealand or Chile?
Japan or China?
Thailand or Vietnam?
Spain or Greece?
Jordan or Iraq?
Bahamas or Cuba?
Jamaica or Haiti?
Ok you can accuse me of selective picking, and I wouldn’t entirely disagree but nonetheless you have to say that outside the United States, countries that are still monarchies today seem to have a better track record than People’s Republics, Democratic Republics or People’s Democratic Republics.
nobama is a “queen”.
I remember you. I was hoping you would show up. I don’t much care for the idea of royalty but it seems to be a human archetype. Even here we treat celebs as royalty, and even seem to favor dynasties in politics for some horrible reason. And I always took you seriously and thought you were brave for standing up for your friend. I do the same here for Sean Hannity and have for at least a decade as well.
FReepers are very little different sometimes from the closed minded libs they despise, sucking up media talking points on concepts they don’t even question. I give you a lot of credit re the Prince because I actually used to think the Bushes were fairly good people. We can all be fooled by this insidious media.
pretty much...
looks like they will have a follow-on Queen....
Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl, but she doesn’t have a lot to say.
I have NEVER understood the large degree of American excitement over all things British. Other then our foreign policy matters alone, when it comes to British society and its “royals”, I have to say “frankly Scarlet I really don’t give a damn”.
The Queen is still going strong, she might just out live old charlie and then his son the Duke of Cambridge William will be King.
Phillip is about as English as a Russian wolfhound. He’s an Austrian Prince. Charles has probably got more Austrian German and Spanish blood than English. Truth Be told the English monarchy are a bunch of royal mutts. LOL!
The royals of Europe are an interconnected, inbred, elitist cabal.
