Sally Bedell Smith, dogged biographer and author of Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, out this week from Penguin Random House, has collected an exhaustive file of facts about the future king of England. Unlike his mother, Charles is not what you might call a beloved figure. And while Bedell Smith doesn't spare the touchy-feely, parapsychology loving, Dumbo-eared Charles, her portrait is also rich with sympathy, even affection.
Bullied as a youth by his overbearing father (Philip was the original alpha male, Smith says), Charles spent his whole life seeking approval. Cowed by a sense of duty and fearful of even minor mistakes, the well-intentioned, protocol-loving Charles married Diana because his father said he should. No matter that he may have been in love with Camilla Parker Bowlesshe didn't pass muster.

Being King or Queen there is not worth a warm bucket of spit (powerwise) kinda like the U.S. Vice Presidency.
Exactly. If they want the monarchy to survive, put some fresh, young, attractive blood in there.
I don’t think “tampon boy” and his wife will be as appealing than a family with young children.
LOL!
One of the best punk rock songs ever!
The House of Windsor has made it ours.
I always have thought that if John Kerry married Camilla and had a baby it would look like the Jackass the Democrat Party uses as their mascot...
“When he was eight years old, he visited the Mountbatten estate for a formal lunch and the attendees were all eating wild strawberries. Charles was methodically picking them stems off the berries. Lord Mountbatten told him, “No, no. You hold them by the stems to dip in the sugar.””
HE HAD THE HARDEST LIFE EVER!!!!!!!!!
Charles is a closet muslim. He adores them.
Holding in the vomit.
What an idiot! The US saved their butts on many occasions.
What he said there was sacrilegious, IMO.
They invite Muslims there? Think twice before asking the US to spill one precious drop of American blood to save you from your stupid decisions.
Yes. Best thing we ever did...overthrowing that bunch.
Thank God for the Founders and other Patriots who made it happen!
“Give me liberty or give me death!”
Remember Princess Diana. So beautiful and lovely.
About 50% of the US population wanted Obama to be King and "live a life of luxury" and also wanted Hillary to be Queen and "live a life of luxury".
(or do I have those roles reversed?)
Not to mention in that system of government the Monarch is the equivalent of our Constitution - the Monarch is what gives every government institution it’s legitimacy to exist and its powers are delegated authority from the Monarch. Every government official swears to protect and defend the Queen just as ours swear to protect and defend the Constitution. This institution is not merely a ceremonial office and the Monarch is not just a figurehead and it would not be simple at all to do away with it.
Sometimes it's better to be on the bottom.
I was in N. Ireland on business the weekend of her funeral.
Only thing I could do was sit in my hotel room and watch the service.
NOTHING was open for business.
If Chuckie ends up living as long as his mother, he’ll be king for at least another 22 years. Plenty of time to do plenty of damage, even if only a figurehead.
“How do you know he’s the king?”
“He’s the only one who doesn’t have s___ on him.”
Prince Charles is not a frog, he is an ugly toad. And dumber than dirt.
Forget the psychobabble. Even many Brits concede that this is one of the dumbest men in England. Long live the Queen!
