Sally Bedell Smith, dogged biographer and author of Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, out this week from Penguin Random House, has collected an exhaustive file of facts about the future king of England. Unlike his mother, Charles is not what you might call a beloved figure. And while Bedell Smith doesn't spare the touchy-feely, parapsychology loving, Dumbo-eared Charles, her portrait is also rich with sympathy, even affection.
Bullied as a youth by his overbearing father (Philip was the original alpha male, Smith says), Charles spent his whole life seeking approval. Cowed by a sense of duty and fearful of even minor mistakes, the well-intentioned, protocol-loving Charles married Diana because his father said he should. No matter that he may have been in love with Camilla Parker Bowlesshe didn't pass muster.

Princess Anne likes horses too. I’ve never seen the Queen happier than when riding a horse.
Agreed! No argument from me. I just don’t like his leftist politics.
Um...Charles is not the king. His mum is still the queen. In fact, he may die before she does which would make the entire exercise of his desires...moot.
nothing that will win more people over the the idea of getting rid of the monarchy than having this noisy twit on the throne.
Hear, Hear
Not news.
Changing the succession requires an Act of Parliament in each of 16 Commonweath realms.
Never going to happen, and not even on the table. The only way the Prince of Wales does not become King is if he predeceases his mother.
The English monarchy actually still has a ton of power, if not directly political than through their utterly massive wealth. I’ve read reports that only the Catholic Church has more. So it does matter.
The U.K. Needs to be liberated from its inbred do-nothing monarchy. If I were a citizen of the U.K., I’d say ‘Off with their heads!”
Charles, what inbreeding in the monarchy has produced.
Does British law let the monarch just dip into this kitty at pleasure?
That COULD be the source of mischief, yes.
Funny, I was thinking that he was a closet gay. I mean, would a straight man abandon a wife as hot as Princess Di?
DILLIGAS
Mums boy... Never could please daddy, prefers older woman, has issues dealing with the public, etc., etc..... Charles, give up the throne after waiting his entire life to take over? Not likely.
He will become King and last a decade or more... He’s only 68 and he’s probably going to live into his 90s like mum an dad. So lets hope mum can hang in there another decade to shorten his time as King. He will be the oldest person to ever rule as King besting his distant relative King William the IV (who became King at 64) by many years. If he screws it up real good, he may even be the last King.
But who knows... Maybe parliament will convince him to forgo the throne in favour of his son who will be a much more thoughtful and obviously desirable monarch... Especially when it comes to the Queen standing beside the monarch on coronation day.
Can you imagine Camilla as Queen? LOL... The old trout would look so dreadful standing beside him, it might even make him look more handsome in comparison. In fact, I’m not quite sure who’s more manly... Camilla, or Charles.
Charles is an idiot. But he’s going to be King if mum dies. Looks like we did the right thing a couple of hundred years ago.
The Prince may not step aside voluntarily but one of his sons may help him to retire early.
The Brit public knows that Diana’s death wasn’t natural or accidental. Prince Charlie is Milque-toasted
I don’t see anything wrong with them keeping their titles but if I were British, I would want them to be totally separated from the government.
I sure don’t know much about the monarchy but recall reading that the Queen still has some power tho it is of the kind that if she wielded it very often, she would probably lose it.
Why does ANYBODY want a king or a queen? Seems like just throwing money at folks to live a life of luxury.
The problem is the Queen owns lots of land. Lots and lots of it. George III traded the rents for that land to pay off his debts. Each Monarch reaffirms that deal even though I think the terms only applied to GIII. If the monarchy goes away, the title to the land still stays and Parliament loses the rent and tourist income and also has to deal with a powerful and maybe aggressive landlord.
His sister, Princess Anne is more loved. Strong woman. She married soldiers and admirals.
