Thay apparently did not believe in ‘expansions joints’.
I read that a gas line underneath may be the cause- that would be different than thermal expansion, if that is the case

But what’s the pressure of the weight of the concrete? I’d expect the gas either to stop, or to work its way (eventually) to the sides.
