NEW YORK (WABC) -- A decorated Marine veteran facing a mandatory three years behind bars on a gun charge will not be going to prison, after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stepped in and commuted his sentence Friday.

Marine Sergeant Hisashi Pompey's conviction stands, but the penalty is gone. Additionally, a full pardon remains under review.

"Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, this isn't April Fools, right?" he said, when we told him the good news. "I don't know how to react. I'm grateful, grateful."

As we told you exclusively earlier this week, Pompey was fighting for his freedom after his arrest. Now, he won't have to serve a single day in prison.

Yes but “once a Marine” he’s no longer subject to the UCMJ.

"...I was always under the impression that a large percent of New Jersey folks are salt of the earth, patriotic and as good as the come. Am I wrong?..."

You are not wrong.

Everything you said is true; with the exception of a few notable areas such as Newark, Camden, and a few other notable cesspools.

The other real problem here in NJ are the Trenton politics, mostly controlled by liberal constituencies such as unions and the like.

So much of the state is in fact very conservative-

Why not a pardon? He’s still a convicted criminal as of this commutation.

I do not like you, Christie, but thank you very much. Very good thing you did.

It's ridiculous that you register your weapon in one state and it's illegal in another state.

There has to be reciprocity. It's in the Federal Constitution....not a states rights issue.

Jersey is pretty patriotic. We are outnumbered by hellhole cities like Newark,Paterson (ISIS isnout in open there), Trenton, and some hippie places like Princeton. However, we have lots of rural areas and burbs that are right of center. We are passwd the tipping point however, and Christie will be the last state wide GOP office holder

Since he had served as military police I would imagine he might have thought he could break up the barroom fight. For me he has the benefit of the doubt.

Hisashi is a Japanese name, but Pompey does not look Japanese, or even haafu-kokujin (son of a black man married to a Japanese, or vice versa). I wonder what led his parents to name him Hisashi.

P.S. I'm glad the sentence was commuted; I'm sorry his Marine career cannot be returned to him.

Although he is not a Marine. He is a Marine veteran. Huge difference.

Not really. Once a Marine, Always a Marine.

” I wonder what led his parents to name him Hisashi. “

Maybe they just liked it.

I knew a black girl named Yoshi-———her mother had seen it somewhere and just thought that it was a cute name.

And they would be legally wrong.

Legally or illegally, the Marines have something no other service has. Every Marine is a Rifleman. There are no dead-heads in the Corps.

It should be a full pardon, not just a commutation.

This Marine has a felony conviction on his record now, which probably precludes him from even legally owning a gun...

Technically you're correct.

As an ex-Army soldier, I don't refer to myself as a soldier, just a Veteran.

Maybe they just liked it.

It's possible :-) Mr. Bryant was named Kobe after Kobe beef mentioned on a Japanese restaurant menu, so stranger things have happened.

Every one of the services has something no other service has.

Every one is vital. Every one is courageous. And I say all this as someone who has commanded or led — or who has been commanded or led by — members of all branches, except Coasties, in joint operations. But I did get to work WITH the latter a couple of times and they were awesome.

The various services are super, however, I support the Marines above all others. They are often treated like the step-child, yet never act like toy soldiers. Let the chips fall where they may. I am very happy General Mattis is a Marine! We are seeing the results of his leadership.
