How Trump’s Threat to Separate Mothers and Children Deterred Migration (READ THIS)
The Wire ^ | April 14, 2017 | Julia Edwards Ainsley, Reuters

President Donald Trump has won the first major battle in his war on illegal immigration and he did it without building his wall.

The victory was announced last week by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which released figures showing a 93% drop since December of parents and children caught trying to cross the Mexico border illegally.

In December, 16,000 parents and children were apprehended; in March, a month in which immigration typically increases because of temperate weather, the number was just over 1,100.

It was a remarkable decline – steeper than the 72% drop in overall apprehensions – but for eight DHS officials interviewed by Reuters it was not surprising.

Trump has spoken about the need to crack down broadly on all illegal immigrants. But, internally, according to the DHS officials familiar with the department’s strategy, his administration has focused on one immigrant group more than others: women with children, the fastest growing demographic of illegal immigrants. This planning has not been previously reported.

In the months since Trump‘s inauguration, DHS has rolled out a range of policies aimed at discouraging women from attempting to cross the border, including tougher initial hurdles for asylum claims and the threat of prosecuting parents if they hire smugglers to get their families across the border.

The department has also floated proposals such as separating women and children at the border....

Reagan may have been a good President overall but he made some huge mistakes.

All by himself?

The only way W was going to tackle illegal immigration was to give them all amnesty!

I seem to recall a quaint concept that CONGRESS is in charge of WRITING laws...

She pushed for amnesty.

Do we have links to quotes?

No quotes. I saw news reports about her 2 years before Jeb ran in the primary.

They profiled her, and stated (correctly) that her father was an illegal invader himself to the US. Her relationship to her father was troubled, and she had no contract with him in later life.

There have been numerous stories written subsequently that discussed how Jeb was influenced regarding illegal immigration by his Mexican-born wife. At least one of the stories I read discussed Jeb's views on amnesty and other views cozy to the illegals. More famously, Jeb got his underwear in a knot and tried to intimidate Trump into apologizing to Columba during the primary. Trump didn't take the bait.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/253969-trump-wont-apologize-to-columba-bush

The publication The Hill wrote:

Says The Hill: “They speak Spanish at home, and Bush allies credit her with helping shape Jeb’s ‘act of love’ message on immigration reform.”

The Washington Post profiled Jeb in 2013 as an "honorary Hispanic" due to Columba's influence.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/hispanic-consciousness-lends-weight-to-jeb-bush-as-gop-eyes-2016-presidential-race/2013/04/24/ed830402-aa9a-11e2-b6fd-ba6f5f26d70e_story.html?utm_term=.bccf389358c2

When Jeb was running in 2015, this came out:

Jeb Bush Endorses Unlimited Amnesty in Spanish Telemundo Interview

“For the 11 million people [who are here illegally], they must come out of the shadows, receive a work visa, start paying taxes and also pay a small fine, learn English, don’t receive government benefits, but they come out of the shadows and they receive legal status after some time,” Bush said on Monday, according to a translation provided by CNN.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come to a logical conjecture.

Retail milk prices, the report said, would increase 90 percent if all immigrant labor was lost.

That means the wholesale price would have more than doubled.

Somehow I doubt that.

But even if true, that would be more than offset by the decrease in taxpayer-funded services the now-absent invaders would no longer be collecting.

There is very little human labor in milk production. This is BS.

Feeding a milking cows requires some labor but not much compared to the milk produced. Total labor bill at retail is probably a few pennies on the dollar.

Right up there with Juan McCain’s scam about “$5 lettuce”.

All by himself?

What does that mean? All Presidents are responsible for their actions and for the actions of those under them when operating under his orders.

So yes; all by himself. I liked Reagan for the most part but his amnesty thing was the worst thing this country has seen immigration wise. He should have known the left had no intention of keeping their word about securing the border. If he didn't it would mean he was naive and incompetent and I don't buy it. He knew. It was far worse than just giving those people free citizenship after so many had to work and wait for years and years to get it; it put a big ole welcome sign to illegals going forward on every border.

I'm so glad we have a President, an AG, a DHS secretary now who have the spine to enforce our border laws and start punishing those who break them in a serious way. Making it a felony for anyone who has been caught and deported to again be in the USA illegally should have been done 60 years ago. At least it's happening now.

I'm not a rocket surgeon; but I'd like some actual FACTS to look at before passing judgement.

Kroger, in central Indiana, has milk @ $1.29 a gallon.

(Could be the loss leader; who knows.)

Nope!

Did you hear Jeb Bush during the primary calling illegal immigration "an act of love"?

And they are DOING it in accordance with the LAW.

NONE are doing it 'by themselves'.

you keep repeating that - what exactly is your point? W wanted amnesty, got the Senate, who wasn’t against it in the least, to write and pass a bill. just like Trump will do with a wall and tax cuts. The executive branch doesn’t stay out of politics.

Is there a limit on how much a person can buy?

If so, it’s a loss leader.

My local Aldi has been selling eggs for $.38 per dozen for a month “or so”.

Can’t remember if there’s a limit.

They’ve also got butter for $2.00 per pound - limit 6.

I still don’t get your point. Right, in a chain of command orders or instructions are given, then those on down the line carry them out.

This is a given going back to the caveman days so what is your point?

Really?

We have Laws and a Structure in place that deals with these things.

I've seen NO evidence that Trump is going AROUND any of them; but actually USING them.
