Hey y'all. Don't eff with me, I'm drunk, but somehow i got this virus called brontok something screwin with my computer while I'm trying to enjoy pounding a few brewskis and jammin to some old Guess Who tunes. Are Burton Cummings and Randy Bachmann the coolest rock and roll dudes ever or what? Anyway, A while back somebody posted 3 or 4 essential free virus protection programs or whateve the hel you call them and I'm hoping one of them wil rid me of this pest. A little help?

I’ve had minor virus’s in the past. I was able to find a solution to them by googleing the name of the virus and doing a little research. If you know the name of the virus then chances are someone has found the solution you need and you can follow their instructions to rid your computer of it. If you get any hits that want you to pay for a cure or something like that then skip them and look for a free solution. It may or may not be possible but it worled for me on more than one occasion.

If I were you, I would wait until tomorrow when you’re sober and can concentrate enough to look into it.

Sounds like you need to follow the example of the man in the WH. Don't touch the stuff!

Sure. One thing you need to do, though, is FIRST empty the "Recycle Bin" of no longer needed files manually. Also uninstall any fishy-sounding programs from the drive using the Windows' "Add/Remove Programs" or better yet install "Revo Uninstaller" (free version) and use that:

https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Booting with AVG Rescue Disk keeps your virus from activating from the main hard drive boot sector on startup. Download the (free) AVG Rescue Disk from this page:

http://www.avg.com/us-en/download.prd-arl

Install it on a cheap flash drive and use it only for this purpose, and for possible future instances.

When I used to work in a shop, we usually just pulled the hard drive out and made it just another secondary drive in a known shop clean machine with good antivirus/anti-malware tools, scan/cleaned it there, then put it back in the customer machine and finished tuning it up there.

(You might want to download large programs at a local library workstation, since they are usually much faster and regularly maintained to be virus-free.)

Setting up the free versions of CCleaner, Malwarebytes, and AVG Free Antivirus, and regularly scanning your drive With them (in that order) will help keep your drive from getting virus/malware intrusions.

A little help?

What help are you seeking? You told us your puter contracted a virus and that someone posted some free virus checkers. But you didn't state what you need help with?

Or were you seeking help in confirming if the Guess Who were all that great or not? Like women late night in the bars after a certain amount of consumption of the beverages served there, they always look better than they do in the morning. Does that help? 8>)
