Things aren’t looking very good for United Airlines at the moment. The airline is dealing with a public relations nightmare, their stock is tanking, and to top it all off, they are under review by the Department of Transportation.
The DOT announced last night that they’d be looking into United over how they treated the passenger who was physically ejected from their overbooked plane this weekend. Their statement says that the department will particularly examine rules regarding overbooked flights, as well as the procedures for dealing with fliers who refuse to give up their seats.
Fox News noted that the United incident has prompted calls for a congressional investigation and a review of policy. This comes after the Chicago’s Department of Aviation confirmed that one of the officers involved in the confrontation has been suspended from his job and will be investigated.
“Sometime in the next 24 hours (if it hasn’t happened already), some far left kook will show up on CNN or MSNBC and blame this on President Trump.”

First United Airlines really made a serious mistake in taking paid passengers off of an over booked flight for the convenience of the own employees. That is wrong on so very many level.
According to Rush this morning, Dr. Dao left the plan and then snuck back onto the aircraft. Then he became belligerent when asked to again leave. Once he left he should not have secretly returned to his seat on the plan.
If he had been asked to leave by the flight attendant he should have politely refused and not make a fuss.
While refusing the orders of a airline flight crew is a felony, the law is suppose to be to be to insure passenger safety. There is noting about not giving up your seat to a flight crew that wants to fly to their next job assignment that would be a threat to passenger safety.
The Aviation Security company really blew it bad by over reacting, but that is a sign of lack of training and probably bad communications among everyone. I can understand that if they thought he was belligerent and failed to follow instructions of a flight crew member they thought they could arrest him as a felon.
Dr. Dao should have just smiled at the Aviation security folks, said he would cooperate with any lawful request and asked what laws he had violated. Then if they said he had to leave ask if he was under arrest and on what charges. If they just said come with us, he should have said, If I am under arrest I will cooperate and peacefully leave the plane, if I am not under arrest please leave me alone.
Now the CEO of United Airlines is an absolute fool and should be fired by the Board of Directors. The United Overbooking policy should be re-examined to prevent over bookings. If flight crews use standby flights to get to their assignments, THEY SHOULD BE STANDBY AND NOT BUMP PAYING CUSTOMERS!
I will wager that United Airlines will pay dearly for this in terms of lost market share, increased advertising expenses, litigation costs associated with this case. They need to fire the bad-mouthing CEO and they need to come up with a new tag line as “fly the friendly skies of United” will cause them to be a laughing stock for decades.
Crew rest period?
So what. I’m sure the conditions of the ticket allow any airline to tell someone to get off their plane.
Not if you don’t follow the proper procedure.

I read that there are two doctors with the same last name and that the doc on the flight is not the same as the one with drug and sex charges. If true, not only will United be paying, but so will TMZ and a few other news outlets...

I watched the video. Then listened/watched the author of the video on Tucker Carlson. Maybe I’m missing something, but I saw a crazy man running up and down the plane aisle acting like a spoiled, entitled child - I don’t care if he paid for the ticket or not, that is snowflake behavior. I’ve been bumped several times and I accept the travel voucher and go on with my life; granted never getting bumped after already being in my seat. United stocks might go down, but I see doc losing some credibility as well (wacky guy). That stated, United had other options but chose this one. Not good.
If crew flew standby it would create cascading cancellations which would cause many more inconvenienced passengers.
Involuntary denial of boarding happens 40,000 times a year with united responsible for about 3700 of it. Voluntaries are a much higher number. It only takes one crazy person to make it into a news story.
The only way to stop overbooking (which is done because on average not everyone shows up for the flight) is for all airlines to stop doing it. This is because to stop doing this, you have to raise the price of the tickets for the remaining passengers. If only one airline decides to stop using yield management techniques they will no longer be competitive with the remainder that continue to use it. Since competition in the airline industry is mostly about price, they would then lose market share. Therefore, they wouldn’t stop doing it unless all others did as well which would be through...government regulation. I imagine the DOT, as part of their announced inquiry, will eagerly look into this.
