Alabama Governor Robert Bentley to Resign Over Affair
The Political Insider ^ | 04/10/2017

Posted on 04/10/2017 12:38:08 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has been under fire. The Alabama Ethics Commission found reason to believe he committed four felony crimes, and he’s in serious trouble.

The focus is on an improper relationship with Rebekah Caldwell Mason, his senior political advisor.

Now, he will resign:

It Is becoming clear that Robert Bentley will not last the week as governor.

Sources in Montgomery say his lawyers have been involved in negotiations to step down from the governorship and plead to lesser charges, allowing Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey to step up as governor.

Sources believe he will resign the governorship by Wednesday.

Bentley has been under fire for the better part of the year but pressure over the last several days has mounted to untenable heights.

Governor Bentley was recorded by his wife having conversations with Mason, where he described sexual activity. And he allegedly demanded that Mason be allowed to travel in official vehicles after leaving the state payroll, then supposedly used a bodyguard to break up with her.

The details are graphic and fit for a Lifetime TV movie:

Starting in 2013, according to Bentley’s now ex-wife, Dianne, Mason began staying overnight in the pool house of the governor’s mansion, an arrangement that raised eyebrows in Montgomery.

At first, Dianne Bentley excused the frequent sleepovers, according to the report. Mason’s home with her husband, the head of the governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives, was in Tuscaloosa, nearly a two-hour drive from the state capitol in Montgomery. But the first lady of Alabama, a devout Christian who would write prayer requests for her husband on sticky notes that she kept in her personal devotional, was eventually informed by Heather Hannah, her chief of staff, that the governor and Mason would “jump” when interrupted by other members of his staff and that he would return home from work with makeup on his shirts.

The governor’s wife and Hannah were among the more than 20 witnesses interviewed by the special counsel appointed by the Alabama House Judiciary Committee. The report is based on their testimony, as well as a review of more than 10,000 pages of documents, text message transcripts, and emails.

Other members of the governor’s staff began to notice Bentley’s increasingly close relationship with his chief adviser. According to the House committee’s report, Bentley would call Mason “baby” in meetings, and Ray Lewis, the leader of Bentley’s security detail, told the House committee that he had once observed Mason leaving the governor’s office with tousled hair, her outfit disheveled.

This is the type of behavior former President Bill Clinton took part in throughout his long career. But Republicans are held to a higher moral standard, and it’s clear that Governor Bentley’s actions were unacceptable.

Ironically, or perhaps not, Bentley made a big to-do during the 2016 Presidential election campaign, saying he would not support fellow Republican Donald Trump, over comments Trump made towards women.

I’ve been told that Bentley has essentially agreed to resign, working on terms. #alpolitics

Another Anti-TRUMPER bites the dust by his own volition. How many does that make?

At least no one could call her a cheap whore.

This goober is quite the looker. It’s an obvious case of true love, especially if you loved the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.

Naturally, he’s a Republican.

If he were a Democrat, he would not have to resign. Democrats have the advantage of having no morals. So being a lying cheat and a crook is of no moral disadvantage to them.

But Republicans are held to higher standards. And so when we fail at that higher standard - it is expected we resign in shame and disgrace.

Whereas - for a Rat - this is actually a resume enhancer.

Typical power hungry old man.

Hope you enjoy your last few years in disgrace.

I suspect you will find without the title of “governor” very few younger women will be throwing themselves at you.

Should have enjoyed Beulah land with your wife instead.

Looks to me that hubby was/is a willing cuckold. Apparently he traded his manhood for a government job as well. The Masons have two high school age children. These two kids must be mortified.

Why doesn’t he just say he’s gay to get out of scandal like McGreevey did and all will be forgiven.

A Democrat wouldn’t have resigned, and would have been offered a high level position in a select congressional committee or the next Presidential administration. (See Barney Frank)

As a Democrat, “who one loves” is a “constitutional right.”

When Bentley ran for the governorship in 2010, he was an unknown dermatologist from Tuscaloosa whose biggest claim to fame was that he was Bear Bryant’s doctor.

Surprisingly, he made it into a runoff against Bradley Byrne (now the US congressman from Mobile). Bentley then openly courted the teachers’ union money and support in the runoff, taking advantage of the Republican Party’s open primary. He managed to win the Republican runoff and then destroy the Democrat in November (Ron Sparks).

He’s not really a Republican, and he’s definitely not a conservative. He was elected by being in the pocket of the teachers’ union.

Bentley is not resigning because of an affair. Everyone has known about the affair for years. The affair was the root problem but it is more complicated than that.

Bentley is resigning because the Alabama House has begun impeachment hearings over felony charges which stem from his relationship with his aide.

“Last week, the Alabama Ethics Commission ruled there was probable cause to believe the governor violated state ethics law and committed three campaign finance law violations.”

He is trying to make a deal to reduce felonies to misdemeanors. Bentley was a former doctor and a RINO and not a strong governor.

Bentley is resigning today at 5pm CDT ... not Wednesday as stated in this article. Kay Ivey is the state’s Lieutenant Governor and expected to be sworn in as Governor by 6pm today.

This story involves a Republican governor (Alabama) resigning in Alabama to avoid impeachment. Impeachment hearings began today.

Can we elevate this article to Front Page News or at least Extended News?
