Passengers ‘shaky and so disgusted’ as United forces screaming doctor off a plane

“No, this is wrong,” a woman shouts at security officers in the video.”Oh my God, look at what you did to him!”

A disturbing video was uploaded to Facebook by Audra Bridges Sunday night. It shows a full United flight sitting at a Chicago airport and bound for Louisville. But there was a problem – United had overbooked the flight, they needed four seats for their stand-by crew and no one was volunteering to give up their spot.

That problem led to a violent confrontation as security forced one passenger off the plane, who said he was a doctor and couldn’t take a later flight because he had patients to see at his hospital in the morning.

Bridges, a Louisville resident, told the Courier-Journal that United announced in the terminal Sunday night that the flight was overbooked and offered passengers $400 and a night at a hotel to give up their seat and opt for a flight at 3 p.m. on Monday. No one volunteered, and passengers boarded the flight. United told the full flight that they couldn’t take off without the four seats, then upped the offer to $800 plus a night at a hotel, but still no one volunteered.

Some folks are indicating that United is actually deleting negative comments on their Facebook page.
If they are indeed doing that, that company is more insane and utterly tone-deaf than anyone realized.

“I think if I were to be chosen to leave the plane I would have done number 1 or even number 2 in the seat.”

Stop it, no you wouldn’t.

I was at an aircraft museum and one of the docents said it’s easy to tell if your commercial pilot was previously Navy or previously Air Force. Navy pilots are trained to land on short runways of aircraft carriers and Air Force are trained to land smoothly on long airways. So if the pilot sets it down abruptly, he/she was probably former Navy.

They gave me a $10 voucher for lunch - what a trade!

I think folks on Jury Duty get more than that.

It is NOT cash ... It is in the form of a "voucher"

Not true. Read your contract of carriage. Know your rights.

Many circumstances require the airline to pay you cash, not a voucher. If they offer you a voucher, you have to ask for money instead.

Plus if it is the airline's fault, not something like weather, there are circumstances in which you get paid 4x the price of your original ticket.

Check in 24 hours in advance? That’s standard. I did that Saturday for a flight yesterday. I think most airlines have that - if not all.

"...Read your Contract of Carriage. Know your rights..."

How do you think things would have changed while he (correctly) refused to deplane and instead opted to first have his attorney brought onto a teleconference to discuss the matter?

Perhaps the airline should have instead been offering free-of-charge tickets and waved around a handful of crisp $100.00 bills and resolved the whole issue in 60 seconds or less? Not to mention smiling customers.

That post was written with more than a bit of sarcasm directed to the idea that United should have used a ‘first come first served’ method of bumping passengers.

I confirm in advance too, expecting a seat once I do, or at a minimum, a civil response from the airline if too many people show up.

He wasn’t injured? He was knocked out cold and bleeding, very clear from the video, yet you comment he wasn’t injured?

Here’s the deal, though: They were already on the plane and seated.

The passenger was grappled by the police and jerked hard enough to propel his face into the armrest across the aisle, resulting in a severe enough laceration to cause significant bleeding, which is visible as blood streaks down his chin, when he boarded the plane a second time, prior to his final removal.

What do you suppose would vhe happened if someone had changed his or her mind and decided to take United’s money after they started dragging this guy off?

From what I can tell there are 35,000 negative comments. I read several by CEO’s of companies saying no more United bookings for their people.

We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation.”

I wouldn't say a word to United. I would have a skilled, ugly lawyer do all the talking.
