Putin's choice: Trump or Assad?
MEMRI ^

Posted on 04/09/2017 3:18:03 PM PDT by BestPresidentEver

These are all are major reversals of Trump’s declared positions, and a major blow to Moscow’s hopes for reshaping its relationship with Washington. The Kremlin now must find the right strategy to handle this problem. Fortunately, it has a few options it can put on the table next week, when Tillerson meets with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. "Russia’s initial reaction to the chemical attack was a blanket defense of Assad’s air force: they bombed a rebel chemical weapons factory. Those same rebels then staged videos of children dying of exposure to sarin gas. It was predictably hapless. It was also obvious that Moscow was taken aback by the attack. Russia’s friends in Syria failed to give them the heads up.

I find it incredibly difficult to find a rationale motive for Assad ordering this attack. This article is the closest to one that I've found. Assad is alarmed by the improvement of Russian-American relations and wants to sabotage this and force Russia to choose between Syria and America in the belief that if forced they will choose Syria.

That’s the crux of the problem. No one will ask the question, What would Assad gain with this attack.

We are to swallow whatever they tell us. If I believed everything they told us, I would never have voted for Trump. I would believe the Russian prostitute pissing story and the Trump/ Russian story.

Try it Putin and see what America can do. Who in hell does this little man think he is? Ruler of the world. He associates with the worst criminals on the globe and thinks this protects him.

Assad’s motive was the same as Sadam Hussein’s when he gassed the Kurds. Kill the enemy and scare to inaction the ones that don’t die.

Remember that Assad is the evil that is behind de-stabilizing Lebanon by funding Hezbollah gangsters and is basically the westernized face of Islamist Iran.

Maybe Asad has a 5th column rouge military element that are forcing these things without approval? In order to attain the objectives you suggest .
Who know what evil brews in that Hell pit . Iran ?

Capture Assad and put him on trial. Watch every one return. But then more hell will break loose.

Divide the country. Or draw new borders eliminating the country adding on to each neighbor who the people want to join. Kurds with Kurds. Sunni with Sunni etc

Putins choice is more between Iran and Trump

Putin has been helping both Iran and North Korea developed more sophisticated nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Putin has been propping up Syria in collaboration with Iran

The US wants to destroy the Iranian/North Korean nuclear program and get Iran out of Syria and Lebanon as well as defeating ISIS so Syrian Refugees will be safe to return home

Both Russia and Syria have very important choices to make.

I find it incredibly easy to find a motive for Assad. He has a mass murdering thug who has brutalized his people for years. Gassing them again was just more psywar and a tactical move to clear out opposition.

Of course if you are inclined to be supportive of Assad and his patron in one party state fascist Russia then the old adage “loving eyes will never see” comes to mind.

Putin has to block the ME pipeline to Europe at all costs lest he lose his LNG monopoly and the ability to weaponize energy.

Correct. Putin also needs the US if he can have the right kind of relationship. Russia is not wealthy and still struggles under the corrupt oligarchy. Putin has built his power base on controlling that and creating as much wealth as he can, and he will factor these choices through that filter.

Putin, Assad, and Trump all want to see the end of ISIS. Two of those three will still be in power after ISIS is gone. Guess which one might not?

“Assad is alarmed by the improvement of Russian-American relations and wants to sabotage this and force Russia to choose between Syria and America in the belief that if forced they will choose Syria.”

That is a very tenuous bit of logic at best.

Perhaps the question is, “what would Russia gain from the attacks?”

A graceful exit from their support of Assad?
