LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles man says he’s found a solution to the city’s housing crisis in the most unlikeliest of places.

T.K. Devine wants to help solve L.A.’s homeless problem with portable toilets.

“Folks who are living it rough and living on the streets and are trying to make a better life for themselves, they need consistency,” Devine told CBS Los Angeles. “They need a good night’s rest.”

The 35-year-old founder of Porta-Home is converting portable toilets into portable homes out of a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, including one built for himself.

...The system rests on a trailer that can be parked on any residential property, and the only hookup needed is a water hose.

I have a friend who has been traveling through the south with his wife in a scamp like this. They spend most of their time hiking or checking out the local micro brews. I think they are heading back to Maine for the summer.

You are right. It’s part of the Agenda 21 plan.

His mom must be proud. This is ridiculous. It’s as bad as the city in Wisconsin years ago that was going to help the homeless by giving them shopping carts. The way to help the homeless is to arrest them for trespassing. Put them to cleaning roads or some other labor. They won’t have time for drinking or drugs. They will figure out real quickly that a job flipping burgers and maybe making sure they pay their rent every month isn’t so bad. Let’s use the money we save to help the one’s that are truly mentally ill.

The multi-unit high-rise idea doesn’t work. Turns into a vertical toilet controlled by gangs.

As I recall, in the end, they had to dynamite Cabrini Green.

“When you have to use the bathroom, just walk around back to the attached shower unit.” .......................... Huh? Sounds awful unsanitary. Find a used RV and put it on a foundation, it will cost a lot less that 20K. Finding a place for homeless is being humanitarian and very charitable, but they have to be made responsible for the up keep. If they were responsible, especially for themselves, they wouldn’t be in the predicament they are in. Getting “Free stuff” doesn’t encourage carrying for that which you received. I have more faith in homeless G.I.s, so long as they are in it together as a community, with an orderly room, and a responsible CQ. No uniforms required, because they know the routine. Turn the units over to the street types, within a couple of months you’ll have a dilapidated shanty town with garbage strewn all over the place, and repair folks on constant call. Granted it would appear to be a compound, and Libs would cry over it, but sometimes one has to instill discipline for things to be accomplished.

Los Angeles/the Feds could easily suspend the housing rules and someone could build a skyscraper full of 300-sq ft efficiency apartments that would eliminate the homeless problem overnight.

A skyscraper wouldn't do it…they'd have to build a whole city. But that wouldn't do it either, as all public housing is wrecked, trashed, and ruined by the denizens within a year or even a shorter time. This is really dreadful for the truly deserving poor people, like little old ladies who can't work but go to church every Sunday, try to hold their families together etc.

Many, many moons ago (a little Native American lingo there) the mayor of San Francisco (no,this is not a typo) Frank Jordan instituted a city-wide homeless policy that worked. All of the homeless were gathered up and no longer allowed to live in the streets, pissing and pooping everywhere. Those that could (and would) work, were assisted; those who were NOT mentally ill, but refused to follow societal norms, were no longer allowed to live in the streets. Those with mental illness were treated, whether they wanted it or not. People did not have the ‘right’ to defecate wherever they pleased. This program worked so well they got rid of Mayor Jordan, and the homeless returned to the streets.
Creepozoids all.

[“I think we can do this for under [$20,000]” per unit, he said.]

Wouldn’t it be more economical and dignified to refurbish a vacant motel?

The Lincolns had a nice, snug three-holer outhouse.
So he, Mary and little Tad could seek their ease all at once? You would think, OK. Nothing further.

This reminds me of the joke of the guy who rented out his outhouse, actually found a renter, who then sub-leased the “basement”.

Is there a toilet in the “shower” unit? The article wasn’t clear. If there isn’t a toilet in the shower unit, you’re right, major problem.

The cost could be a fraction of that if you ignore the stupid garden on the roof.
