LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles man says he’s found a solution to the city’s housing crisis in the most unlikeliest of places.

T.K. Devine wants to help solve L.A.’s homeless problem with portable toilets.

“Folks who are living it rough and living on the streets and are trying to make a better life for themselves, they need consistency,” Devine told CBS Los Angeles. “They need a good night’s rest.”

The 35-year-old founder of Porta-Home is converting portable toilets into portable homes out of a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, including one built for himself.

...The system rests on a trailer that can be parked on any residential property, and the only hookup needed is a water hose.

“In Kern Co, Calif, one cannot live in their own RV on their own property (without conditional use permit, and only temporarily).”

You can’t where I live.

Many years ago we had a family, with 4 or 5 kids, whose house was destroyed by fire and they had trouble getting permission to live in a mobile home on the property.

They did get the permission, but had to be in the process of rebuilding. It was a temporary permit.

Agree

We are taxed to provide funds to care for the mentally ill.

Guess where the money goes?

Got to keep the mentally ill as an extortion money raiser, will not be cured - - kind of like potholes, streetlights, and police forces.

There goes the neighborhood ...

Excuse me, but camping trailers have been around for years and cost less than $20,000. . . and have better amenities. . . and can include larger beds, air conditioners, sinks, bathrooms, etc. and don't look like converted porte-potties.

Scamp Trailer

"As for a new trailer, the costs will greatly vary depending on the features and options that are added. Typical new Scamp trailers can range from $8,000 to $18,000."

So why settle for an ex poop house when you can have something that is purpose built for human comfort?

Just because an idea is not your idea of a home does not make the person using it a liberal or globalists. All people who live in big homes, if they live long enough will end up in a 12 X 16 room called a nursing home! One bed, one bureau and a tray that comes 3 times a day. If lucky, there will be a private toilet in the room. Yes, even you may live in a tiny space before it’s over with! Or you are a rich person with plenty of money to throw away on private nurses...lol

Tiny homes are an ideal solution to many situations. I plan to own one soon. I have had big, medium, and small homes..as an investor and to live in. Less is more, imho.

Those metal containers are hot, hot in summer, and cold, cold in winter....takes a lot of careful planning to pull off one that doesn’t sweat, isn’t humid, or gets moldy. I have seen a few nice ones, but never thought of living in one.

Just because an idea is not your idea of a home does not make the person using it a liberal or globalists.

I live in a 500-sq ft studio apartment, so I'm not some rich guy with an Al Gore mansion.

Ask yourself why this movement has taken America by storm. Who is promoting it? Who is behind it?

In a nutshell, the elites don't want people - the people who want to achieve the ultimate American dream of home ownership - to have one. They despise suburbia, subdivisions, and rural folks with large homes out in the sticks. They want people concentrated in cities and micro-homes, so they can be easily controlled.

That's why there is this push for micro-homes. It was fabricated to further control people and restrict their movement.

I am a southerner. We have some beautiful homes here, and well built. We do also have double wides, single wides, park models, and old trailers. VARIETY is the spice of life!

I lived in the North for a long time, however, I was born Southern, I returned, and I would NOT want to live anywhere else!

This is the most beautiful place on earth. Four good seasons, great mountain views, and good water!

Necessity is the mother of invention, remember that old saying. In hard times, electricity for big home costs big. Water is expensive, if city water. Size dictates ability to pay the bills. I believe whoever came up with the ‘tiny home’ concept had understood one can live in an RV type setting if necessary, and do quite well! It has NOTHING to do with politics!

It is a great idea, and although it may be exploited by certain groups, it is still a great idea for those who want a simpler lifestyle. Less is more, if arranged correctly.

And your point? Is your opinion any more valid than anyone else’s? Or is seniority all you believe in?

That’s the understatement of the year.

That’s right. It’s tough to adequately describe them. My tag line gives it a shot, though.

Los Angeles/the Feds could easily suspend the housing rules and someone could build a skyscraper full of 300-sq ft efficiency apartments that would eliminate the homeless problem overnight.

Housing regulations are the root of homelessness. The typical government mindset is to shut down the cheap, dumpy housing that keeps people from being homeless. And certainly you can't build new housing intended to be very cheap.

Note that it is possible to build storage units, which rent for less than $100 a month, but it is illegal to rent out a similar kind of space for living purposes. Imagine a set of storage units with a shared bath/shower complex across the parking lot. Instant very low cost housing. But no city would allow it.

I have nothing against tiny houses per se. In fact, it can be beneficial in many ways.

I just think there's this big push to have them all of a sudden, and it's being pushed by the elites.
