The Trump administration is beginning to impose restrictions on visas for foreign workers, creating new uncertainty for the tech industry.
The White House appeared poised to enact sweeping new restrictions on worker visas earlier this year, when Vox obtained a draft executive order with a slew of policy changes under consideration. The draft said the policies were aimed at prioritizing the interests of American workers and to the maximum degree possible the jobs, wages, and well-being of those workers.
That executive order was never issued, but it appears that some of the ideas it contained are now winding their way into the Trump administration. Without fanfare, the Department of Homeland Securitys U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on Friday issued a policy memo that would make it harder for companies to fill computer programmer positions with workers on H-1B visas. The memo stated that being a computer programmer is no longer sufficient to qualify as a specialty occupation.
The agency followed up Monday by announcing that it would begin to crack down on H-1B visa abuses by conducting targeted site visits to companies with a high proportion of high-skilled visas in their workforce.
The H-1B visa program should help U.S. companies recruit highly-skilled foreign nationals when there is a shortage of qualified workers in the country, the agency said. Yet, too many American workers who are as qualified, willing, and deserving to work in these fields have been ignored or unfairly disadvantaged.
In a separate release on Monday, the Department of Justice said that it will not tolerate employers misusing the H-1B visa process to discriminate against U.S. workers.

Thank you, Mr. President!
IT is now a commodity. I agree it makes sense not to treat it as a rare bird that has to be imported.
Finally a step in the right direction. This still falls short though.
Hey
“creating new uncertainty for the tech industry. “
Wrong.
It may make it easier for Americans to get back the jobs that were given to Indians.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
MAGA
DITTO!
YAY!
Can’t be true. I just read Trump is now a puppet of the globalist elites.
It’s still more than most have even bothered to mention.
Enough Indians? Time to bring back the cowboys? Yeeha!
Some people never will be optimists.
:: It may make it easier for Americans to get back the jobs that were given to Indians ::
As long as the video-game players and home-coders are willing to work for the same wages as offered to the H1B immigrants.
At least the paycheck isn’t sent back to some “turd”-world country. [Granted, India is a 2nd-world country].
Tears of joy!
As a 56 year old IT guy, I heartily applaud any moves in this direction.
Little story I heard from someone at a company which hires H1B’s.
They were bringing a new guy in from India about two weeks ago. He landed in the US, and Immigration demanded that he unlock his phone. They went through it, and found some texts back and forth with somebody which indicated that some of the documents used to obtain the visa “might” be fraudulent.
They canceled his visa and put him on the next plane back home. I dare say that probably NEVER happened before Jan. 20.
Trump is apparently using the Obama method of “extreme interpretation” of administrative rules.
At least it’s livable if not deluxe
centro-American IT folks need to look at their compensation demands.
If you ^sit around^ all day creating rudimentary code and playing video-games while collecting welfare checks, why should anyone hire you [the royal ‘you’] if you think your paycheck value should approach $100K/year?
That is market-capitalism in its barest form.
