Dozens of U.S. Missiles Hit Air Base in Syria

President Trump said Thursday night that the United States had carried out a missile strike in Syria on Thursday night in response to the Syrian government’s chemical weapons attack this week that killed more than 80 civilians.

A senior military official said that 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles had hit Al Shayrat airfield in Syria. The missiles were aimed at Syrian fighter jets and other infrastructure but did not target anything that may have had chemical weapons.

He said that no Russian planes were at the airfield and that the cruise missiles did not target any Russian facilities.

How about a “Home on Chip Maker” targeting mode?

1) Let’s assume that Assad really did use chemical weapons for the sake of argument. If he had used incendiaries and burned some children alive in an attempt to fight ISIS, would that really be worse than nerve gas?

2) Do you really want to engage in a policy of nation building in Syria like we’ve done in Iraq and Afghanistan?

3) You don’t think Russia is willing to fight a conflict if provoked, but how willing is the American public to tolerate another war? Trump would lose the good will of most people who voted for him. National security hawks are NOT what got Trump elected.

I do love to think of Kim Jong-Un and his generals crapping their pants. The Norks will give some thought to how much force was just deployed from only TWO US destroyers, in a matter of minutes. Then they can count up how many more warheads the US can deploy from many different delivery systems.

This isn’t “war”, this a legal response and a freebie message to the world - that is: Trump is a strong, decisive leader of the great United States of America, a “new boss is in town” notice to Putin, a clear message to the fat Korean kid with the bad haircut, and to Assad to watch his ass. Trump is further signaling his promised unpredictability. If anyone here has been paying the least amount of attention, Trump strongly stated that Iraq was a huge mistake. He’d much prefer the likes of the “Saddams” of the middle East and African hell holes to rule over the Islamic insects of those regions. Assad should sleep well, knowing this...if he’s not stupid enough to ramp it up another level.

Right.

But I thought that was only for situations that were more urgent in nature - when not acting immediately was more dangerous than waiting for the Congress. Guess not.

Okay, thanks.

You mean a downside like “Whoops, sorry Mr. President, we gave you the wrong intelligence, kinda like the yellow cake fiasco back when, I guess that gives you a good reason to drain the intelligence swamp.”

It’s not war, its a limited strike. I’m all for Americans first but not at the horror of burning civilians, women, children, not at the price of allowing a Hitler-style dictator to inflict agony on people for the crime of existing.

I’d rather face war than let the Obama policy of US-enabled terrorism flourish in the world. Pray for our President, the world is on his shoulders.

So we're world cop? When bad stuff happens it's on the US to kill some more people to *maybe* make one side or other tone down their bad behavior?

I don't think that's what the Founding Fathers had in mind.

That and more, like an obviously coordinated ISIS offensive as soon as it's clear the Syrian AF can't intervene. You know, "gee Mr. President, we can't keep track of all the details throughout the whole country, who knew?".

And, possibly foreign nationals killed in the attack that the Intelligence folks swore were nowhere near that base. Probably not Iranians or Russians, either, since something unexpected would fit the pattern set under Bush in Iraq.

I’m liking this. If they didn’t destroy Russian equipment then it’s all good. Trump is sending a definite signal that we are no longer the paper tiger that Obama portrayed us to be and we will deal with them (the Russians) on an even playing field. Don’t hide behind your little sister (Assad) because we will strike her down to get to you if we have to.

Works for me. Tired of this bullshiite. No playing games. If you want to fight.... then fight.

(Trump... and I both know. The Russians are not going to fight us.) The end game with China is not worth it.

For God’s sake, this isn’t “bad behavior”! They’re using chemical weapons on their own people but also in a region where we have troops. Would you feel better if our guys got doused with sarin or chorine gas?

This is a targeted attack. Not massive troop deployment.

you do know that's bull crap, right? After all the past few months and the lies we have discovered? No sense relying on previous intelligence. Burn down Syria, send the refugees back and welcome Russia back to the table.

I was against this but no longer.

1. We had all the intel to prove Syria did the gas attack. Flight paths, radar signatures, even seeing the bombs dropping, all of it. It’s beyond a shadow of a doubt that Assad was responsible.

2. The days of indecisiveness are over. This was a shot across the bow of not only Syria but Russia, China, North Korea and Iran.

3. Russia was informed prior to the strike.

4. No, it won’t start WW3.

5. Chemical weapons use CANNOT be tolerated.

I would feel better if our guys weren’t there to begin with. Beyond that, let the Syrians or whoever else wants to play, sort it out. Nothing to do with us.

If Assad’s regime were to fall, the vacuum would be filled by Islamic extremists. Do you think we would be content merely to lob cruise missiles then? I’ve heard people on this board saying “Assad has to go!”, that same was said about Saddam Hussein. To do that it took “boots on the ground.” Where is all this nonsense going? If you say that all these missiles were merely a “message”, then that was an awfully expensive message to send if no real damage was done. On the other hand if significant damage WAS done, how does the West benefit from Syria’s enemies (most of whom are Islamic radicals) gaining a relative strength advantage?

In what universe is Assad reasonably like Hitler? I swear...the whole “look what Hitler did!” line has been used to justify intervention within every nook and cranny of this planet.
